Job summary

Good Shepherd- Emmanuel House Hospice in Hamilton, Ontario is hiring Personal Support Workers. This role offers a rate of pay of $24.15 per hour plus an additional $3 per hour PSW premium.

The PSW position requires a PSW certificate; CPR and First Aid are mandatory. Experience with end-of-life care or life-limiting illness is preferred. Candidates should be able to work a 12-hour shift schedule covering days and nights.

Responsibilities

  • Provide care to persons, families at end of life.
  • Assist with personal care tasks (bathing, grooming, dressing).
  • Administer medications according to prescribed instructions.
  • Help with meal preparation and feeding.
  • Perform light housekeeping (laundry, tidying).
  • Assist with transportation to appointments or outings.
  • Provide companionship and emotional support.
  • Monitor changes in condition and report.
  • Complete documentation and other duties.
  • Work independently and with the care team.

How You Will Make an Impact

Emmanuel House Hospice is a ten-bed palliative care facility located in Hamilton that offers a home-like environment for individuals who are nearing the end of their lives. Support and care are provided in a team-based approach, including various interdisciplinary team members such as personal support workers, nursing, physicians, spiritual and psychosocial support. We embrace a holistic model of care and the importance of providing individuals dignity at the end of their life, while providing opportunity for the resident and family to exercise religious, cultural and spiritual rituals, customs, rites and beliefs.



  • Provide care to persons, families and friends at the end of life

  • Assist with personal care tasks, such as bathing, grooming, and dressing

  • Administer medications according to prescribed instructions

  • Help with meal preparation and feeding

  • Perform light housekeeping duties, including laundry and tidying up

  • Assist with transportation to appointments or outings

  • Provide companionship and emotional support to individuals

  • Monitor and report any changes in the individual's condition or behavior

  • Administrative work, such as documentation and other duties

  • Work independently and collaboratively within the care team

  • Deliver care in a person-centered way that considers the resident's personal and cultural needs/preferences

  • Responsible for participating in Good Shepherd's Health and Safety programs, procedures, procedures and work in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations to minimize risk to clients, staff and others as well as to the property of the Good Shepherd


What You'll Bring to Our Team


  • PSW certificate, in good standing from an approved and recognized institution

  • Current CPR and First Aid certificate is required

  • Experience working with individuals in the end of life or with a life limiting illness

  • Good judgement, problem-solving and assessment skills

  • Enhanced training in palliative/end of life care, such as Fundamentals in Hospice Palliative Care considered an asset

  • Excellent attendance record

  • Must be available to work a 12-hour shift schedule that includes days and nights

  • Ability to speak French and/or other languages considered an asset

  • Excellent resident to staff ratio that allows for exceptional resident care

  • Fluency in a language in addition to English is an asset
