The Personal Support Worker, under the direction of the Assistant Director of Care, Charge RN, RN or RPN, is the primary front-line monitor of resident well-being and reports any changes in resident status or concerns to the registered nursing staff. The PSW assists in the delivery of high-quality, person-centered care on assigned Resident Home Areas. Duties are discharged in a manner that is consistent with the mission, vision and values of Providence Care Centre, the Resident’s Bill of Rights, and the requirements of the Long-Term Care Homes Act and Regulations. The PSW delivers basic nursing and hygiene care for residents and assists them with activities of daily living, based on assessed needs and care-plan requirements.
Skills And Qualifications Required
Personal Support Worker Certificate from an approved college preferred (equivalent education and experience may be considered)
Proven ability to work with minimum supervision
Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills coupled with the ability to work as a team player
Good attendance, good physical condition, including the ability to carry out physically demanding duties is essential
Position Responsibilities
Takes direction from Charge RN, RN or RPN regarding priority-setting and the delivery of care.
Familiarizes self with the care plan of residents to whom she/he is assigned to provide care.
Follows a consistent approach when interacting with residents who may exhibit difficult behaviours.
Provides direct-care for residents as outlined in the written care plan or as requested by the resident. Direct care encompasses but is not limited to: assistance with activities of daily living; exercise, positioning and ambulation; bowel and bladder care; collection of specimens; any other care required to ensure resident safety and comfort.
Assists residents with matters of personal hygiene and grooming, which may include: toileting, bathing, showering, shampooing of hair, basic nail care, pericare, oral care of mouth, teeth and/or dentures, shaving, combing and other care as stipulated in the resident’s care plan or as requested by the resident.
