Job description

Duties

  • Report any changes in patient condition or occurrences/incidents immediately to the nurse.
  • Assist with aspects of activities of daily living which includes positioning in bed or chair; giving of a bath: attending to proper grooming and dressing; making occupied and unoccupied beds and serving food and beverages to patients.
  • Assist with ambulation as appropriate.
  • Ensure dirty linen is placed in the dirty utility room.
  • Assist with patient admissions, transfers and discharges.
  • Operate mechanical lifts and utilizes assistive devices as directed.
  • Assist with collection of basic patient data which includes: height, weight, and measurement of intake and output. May take and record vital signs once education package has been done.
  • Collect urine, stool or sputum specimens as requested.
  • Assist with preparation of patients for transport.
  • Provide constant care or close observation to patients as directed.
  • Answer telephone and patient’s call lights and locate nursing staff as necessary.
  • Speak with patients and families and communicates pertinent information to appropriate nurse.
  • Ensure that spiritual and religious practices and needs are respected.
  • Contribute to the psycho-social needs of patients by assisting them in programs and activities; encouraging and promoting independence; encouraging participation in programs designed to meet physical, spiritual, emotional, intellectual and social needs; respecting a residents’ personal property.
  • Assist with care of the patient after death.
  • Contribute to the efficient and competent management of the unit by attending and participating in care conferences; accurately reporting observations to the nurse; recording on appropriate work sheets; answering phone and taking messages; attending scheduled in-service sessions; informing the nurse about the whereabouts of all patients in his/her care.
  • Comply with hospital infection control practices and isolation procedures.
  • Keep service areas clean and organized i.e. utility rooms and treatment rooms.
  • Keep patient’s environment clean and report any safety hazards.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all patient information.
  • Assist with patient care duties on other units, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Personal Support Worker certification from an approved college program.
  • Competence in BCLS.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of patient care requirements and equipment specific to the clinical area
  • Computer literacy in a Microsoft environment.

Ability

  • Ability to meet physical demands of the job, including extended standing, walking, lifting and climbing using proper technique.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently as a team member in a fast paced environment in stressful situations.
  • Ability to maintain successful working relationships with the interdisciplinary team to achieve positive patient outcomes and meet and interact with people in a pleasant, professional, responsible and reassuring manner.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate to perform the duties of the position.
  • Ability to organize time effectively to perform the duties of the position.
  • Human relations skills including empathy, sensitivity, understanding of human behavior, motivational techniques and counseling skills (e.g. teaching patients).
