Job summary

Regency Manor LTC in Port Hope, ON, is seeking a Personal Support Worker (PSW) for part-time evening shifts (2pm-10pm), 30 hours biweekly with pick-up shifts. Starting wage is $26.76 per hour.

Reports to the Director of Care and delivers direct resident care to meet physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual needs in line with home policies. The role requires a 600-hour PSW program meeting provincial standards; prior long-term care experience is an asset.

Qualifications

• Completed a PSW Program that meets Ministry standards and a minimum of 600 hours (class + practicum).
• Experience in long-term care is an asset.
• Knowledge of care planning systems and documentation is required.
• Mentally and physically able to perform duties as assigned.
• Ability to communicate positively with staff, residents and families.
• Demonstrates empathy and concern in providing quality care.
• Shows strong organizational skills and timely task completion.
• Able to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to read/write English and understand verbal/written instructions in English.

Responsibilities

• Assist residents with ambulation, feeding, bathing and grooming.
• Encourage participation in activities by helping residents to/from events.
• Support meal service and provide feeding assistance as needed.
• Provide emotional and social support to residents and families, including palliative care.
• Follow department policies on documentation, QA, safety, infection control.
• Consult with supervisor about unit needs and resident care matters.
• Participate in care conferences and update care plans.

The Personal Support Worker provides direct personal and nursing care to residents to fulfil the physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual needs of residents in accordance to home polices, procedure and work routines.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assists in providing direct care for residents; assists with ambulation, feeding, bathing and grooming.
• Encourages participation in activity programs by assisting residents to and from activities.
• Assists with meal service and nourishment delivery to residents and provides feeding assistance as required.
• Provides emotional and social support to residents/families including palliative care.
• Adheres to established departmental polices and procedures regarding documentation, quality assurance, fire, safety, environment and infection control.
• Consults with and informs supervisor of unit activities, needs and matters related to resident care.
• Participates in care conferences and documentation related to resident care plans.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

• Completed a PSW Program that meets the appropriate standards established by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, the National Association of Career Colleges, or the Ontario Community Support Association and must be a minimum of 600 hours in duration (including class time and practical experience time)
• Experience in long-term care an asset
• Knowledge and experience in care planning systems and documentation required
• Mentally and physically able to perform duties as assigned
• Ability to communicate positively with other staff, residents and families
• Demonstrates empathy, concern and interest in providing quality care and service to residents
• Demonstrates organizational skills and ability to complete assignments in a timely fashion
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Ability to provide resident care in accordance with application legislation, job routines, nursing care plans, ability to read and write English and understand verbal and written instructions in English.

Additional Requirements include

• A negative vulnerable sector check completed within 6 months of start date.

• Completion of a 2 Step TB Skin test within the last 12 months of start date.
