Staff of Royal Ottawa Place will create an environment where residents, living with a stable but long-term mental illness and with associated behavioural and safety issues can feel at home and have a full, meaningful and diverse life. Staff will provide opportunities for the residents to maintain control over many aspects of their lives in a safe and secure environment.
Duties
- Works under the direction of and in collaboration with the RPN and the Registered Nurse in the care of residents.
- Participates within an interdisciplinary team to provide the best possible care for residents and their support systems as they deal with mental health disorders.
- Supports the arrival, transfer or departure of residents.
- Engages the residents in participation and assuming control in decision-making.
- Maintains documentation and gather data as required.
- Takes primary responsibility for personal care and the facilitation of meaningful daily activities for residents by developing therapeutic relationships, working collaboratively with the care team and the resident in establishing activities.
- Provides individualized personal care as outlined in the resident care plan including personal hygiene, dressing, eating, toileting, transferring, bathing, continence care and behavioural support while at all times respecting the choices of the resident.
- Collaborates with the care team to assess the capabilities of the resident and support the resident at all times.
- Assists the residents in participating in recreational and therapeutic programs designed to maintain and increase the residents’ physical well-being and mental health and to promote a home-like atmosphere.
- Provides supervision and assistance during the preparation, eating and cleaning up duties of each meal, as well as feeding when required.
- Assists residents with their daily housekeeping and personal laundry routines when appropriate.
- Evaluates a resident’s plan of care, ensuring the assessment is up to date and accurately documented.
- Documents on flow sheets and other records as required.
- Assesses and reports daily on the resident’s condition and how care plan interventions are working.
- Other duties as required for the maintenance of a home-like lifestyle of the resident.
- Participates in research related activities to support the facility’s mission to be a centre of training, education and excellence in long-term mental health care.
- Responds to emerging health conditions and medical emergencies.
- Works in a manner that is in compliance with staff and client safety practices, policies and procedures of the Royal.
- Ensures a work environment that is conducive to The Royal’s Anti-Racism, Harassment & Discrimination Free Workplace Policy.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Personal Support Worker certification with 1 year documented experience in long-term care including psychiatric and mental health care, or RPN student with a minimum successful completion of year one, or RN student with a minimum successful completion of year two.
- CPR training or re-certification within the last 12 months.
- Current knowledge of and training in mechanical lifts, transferring and positioning techniques for residents.
- Desires to work with those living with a stable but long-term mental illness with associated behavioural and safety issues.
- Computer skills are an asset.
- English level A- is mandatory in oral expression, oral comprehension, reading and writing. Bilingual (French/English) is considered an asset.
Salary Range: 31.98 to 33.80 per hour
