Job summary

A leading mental health facility is seeking a Personal Support Worker to join their Geriatric Psychiatry Team. This role involves providing comprehensive care to patients with complex mental illnesses in an inpatient setting, promoting their physical and mental well-being, and participating in interdisciplinary care efforts. The ideal candidate will have certification as a Personal Support Worker or be a nursing student with relevant coursework completed, combined with empathy, strong communication skills, and a passion for working with the elderly.

Qualifications

  • 1 year documented experience in long-term care including psychiatric and mental health care.
  • GPA training or related dementia care training is preferred.
  • Current knowledge and training in mechanical lifts and patient positioning techniques.

Job description

Under the direction of the Manager, Patient Care Services, you will work as a member of the multidisciplinary Geriatric Psychiatry Team, providing services to people with complex mental illness in an in-patient setting. u00A0 Duties:

  • Works under the direction of and in collaboration with the Registered Nurse/Registered Practical Nurse in the care of patients.
  • Participates within an interdisciplinary team to provide the best possible care for patients and their support systems as they deal with mental health illnesses. u00A0
  • Engages the patients and families to participate in decision making.
  • Maintains documentation and gather data as required.
  • Participates in regular team meetings.
  • Actively participates in personal care and the facilitation of meaningful daily activities for patients by developing therapeutic relationships, working collaboratively with the care team and the patient in establishing activities.
  • Provides individualized personal care as outlined in the patient care plan including personal hygiene, dressing, eating, toileting, transferring, bathing, continence care and behavioural support needs. Facilitating a safe care environment for all and respecting the goals of the patient and family in care.
  • Collaborates with the care team to maximize the capabilities of the patient and support the patient at all times.
  • Assists the patients in participating in recreational and therapeutic programs designed to maintain and enhance the patientsu2019 physical well-being and mental health.
  • Provides supervision and assistance during the preparation, eating and cleaning up duties of meals, and feeding activities when required.
  • Assists patients with their daily housekeeping and personal laundry routines when appropriate.
  • Documents on flow sheets and other records as required.
  • Communicates throughout the shift with registered staff, about the patientu2019s condition and individualized patient care plan.
  • Participates in research related activities to support the facilityu2019s mission to be a centre of training, education and excellence in mental health care.
  • Works in a manner that is in compliance with staff and client safety practices, policies and procedures of The Royal. u00A0

  • Other duties as assigned.
u00A0 Qualifications:
  • Personal Support Worker certification with 1 year documented experience in long-term care including psychiatric and mental health care, or RPN student with a minimum successful completion of year one, or RN student with a minimum successful completion of year two.u00A0
  • GPA (Gentle Persuasive Approach) training , or other related dementia care training is preferred u00A0
  • Current knowledge of and training in mechanical lifts, transferring and positioning techniques for patients. u00A0
  • Desires to work with older adults living with a mental illness and or dementia with associated behavioural and safety issues.
  • Computer skills are required.
  • English level A- is mandatory in oral expression, oral comprehension, reading comprehension and written expression. French level A- is mandatory in oral expression and written expression. u00A0
