Job description

The Vancouver Board of Education welcomes applications for:

Permanent Education Assistant On-Call

(School & Student Support A, SSA, EA)

Location: School TBA

Schedule: September to June each year

Compensation: $32.62 per hour, 6.5 hours/day, 5 days/week

In this position, you will:

  1. Provide SSA support to assist the school as assigned
  2. Implement individual programs and contracts for students who are unable to function in a regular classroom setting under the direction of a senior team member
  3. Evaluate and maintain records of student progress and discuss necessary program adjustments
  4. Support parent engagement through workshops and events
  5. Coordinate with community agencies as required
  6. Organize and participate in field trips, sports, social, recreational, and craft activities
  7. Support students in community-based work experience, travel training, and community outings
  8. Support students with social/emotional challenges and unexpected behaviors (physical/verbal)
  9. Prepare instructional aid materials
  10. Perform other duties within the job band as required

Qualifications:

  • Completion of Grade 12
  • Completion of a Special Education Assistant program or related field with over two months of experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Ability to lift and position students up to 35 pounds
  • Ability to run after a student to prevent danger
  • Provide personal care (including diaper changes, feeding, etc.)
  • Availability to work full-time, Monday to Friday
  • Possess or be willing to obtain an Occupational First Aid Certificate and perform related duties if assigned
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both oral and written
  • Assets include:
    • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training (e.g., CPI or MANDT)
    • Strong practicum or work evaluation
    • Experience with Applied Behaviour Analysis techniques
    • Completion of POPARD coursework
    • Ability to speak a second language
