Peer Support Worker, Substance Use Services

Responsibilities:

  • Establish a dignifying and purposeful relationship with clients, understanding their unique needs.
  • Provide information, support, and resources based on clients' co-created care plans.
  • Assist with community integration and accompany clients to services and appointments.
  • Support effective communication between clients, families, community providers, and Fraser Health staff.
  • Help clients navigate systems such as healthcare, housing, and social services.
  • Promote self-management of health, mental health, and substance use challenges.
  • Support housing needs, including setting up households and connecting with community resources.
  • Participate in program planning, evaluation, and team meetings.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Assist clients in developing life skills like hygiene, housekeeping, and financial management.
  • Distribute medication as per policy, and ensure safety protocols are followed.
  • Stay informed about community resources and assist clients in accessing them.
  • Contribute to a safe working environment and participate in quality improvement activities.

Qualifications:

  • Two years of lived experience in recovery from substance use or co-occurring mental health and substance use issues.
  • Training in Peer Support, completion of relevant certificates, and related work experience.
  • Valid Class Five BC Driver's License and access to a vehicle for work purposes.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Willingness to share lived experience and engage clients empathetically.
  • Knowledge of harm reduction principles and recovery approaches.
  • Effective communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Crisis intervention and conflict resolution skills.
