HOURS - Full-time 8-hour shift

How You Will Make An Impact

In a compassionate, hospitable, and non-judgmental manner, the Peer Mental Health Crisis Support Worker will:

  1. Provide individual face-to-face, telephone crisis, and group support to clients, as required
  2. Facilitate peer groups/workshops in coping techniques and skill development
  3. Assist clients in constructive and therapeutic activities during their stay
  4. Assist clients with symptom management, self-care, and positive coping techniques
  5. Provide information about self-help programs and consumer initiatives in the community
  6. Provide messages of hope and encouragement to clients, within the limits of appropriate boundaries
  7. Make suggestions about resources (books, workbooks, tapes, videos) that may have therapeutic value for clients
  8. Commit to the use of the Recovery and Harm Reduction Models
  9. Participate in Good Shepherd's Health and Safety programs, procedures, and work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act to minimize risks to clients, staff, and property

What You'll Bring To Our Team

  1. Experience/lived experience of the mental health and/or addictions system
  2. Understanding of the Recovery Model and ability to relate to persons in crisis
  3. Willingness to share your own recovery experience and success
  4. Motivational skills and ability to motivate others
  5. Ability to use electronic documentation systems
  6. Knowledge of and experience working with community-based agencies and services
  7. Preference for candidates with training in Peer Support; post-secondary training in social services is an asset
  8. Ability to empathize and strategize to work with persons with a wide range of psychiatric symptoms and issues
  9. Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills
  10. Computer literacy including Word and Excel
  11. Commitment to anti-racist/anti-oppressive practices and to the mission and values of Good Shepherd
  12. Fluency in a second language is an asset
  13. Understanding of workplace health and safety practices and legislation
