The Assistant Professor, General Pediatrics is a board-certified physician that demonstrates excellence in clinical medicine and a commitment to teaching and scholarly activity. The pediatrician performs physical examinations and developmental assessments, manages pediatric illness, and help families meet their healthcare needs. The Assistant Professor is responsible for teaching an interdisciplinary group of students including residents, medical, dental, physician assistant and nurse practitioner students.

Daily Operations

  • Assess the health status of infants, children, adolescents and young adults and develop appropriate plans for health supervision and illness management. Perform physical exams and developmental assessments, manage pediatric illness and help patients meet their health needs. Teaches, counsels and advise children and families about growth and development, health status, illness, health promotion and disease prevention, anticipatory guidelines. Provide care that reflects evidence-based practice, ethical considerations, cost and clinical effectiveness. Provide for appropriate follow-up care. Prescribe medications according to state and federal laws and regulations to treat illness, improve health status and provide preventive care. Participate in periodic chart reviews as part of ongoing quality assurance. Take call on weekdays, weekends and holidays in rotation with the other practice providers. Precept resident and students in the clinical setting.
  • As Pediatric faculty, responsible for teaching and teaching related activities for Meharry trainees including residents, medical, dental, graduate, allied health, physician assistant, and nurse practitioner students. Teaching responsibilities include preparing instructional materials, evaluative materials, and test preparations. Maintain professional skills through continuing education. Advise trainees, mentor trainees and participate in academic reinforcement programs, including tutorials for trainees.
  • Participate in college, school and departmental committee work, curriculum development, professional growth and other such assignments.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, independently, under pressure.
  • Knowledge of examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe working environment.
  • Skill in maintaining records and recording test results.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergencies.
  • Ability to interact with patients, families, physicians and other health care providers and demonstrates empathy and sensitivity necessary to elicit patient's cooperation and to allay apprehension.
  • Ability to operate computer keyboard, terminal and printer, general office equipment, special medical and telephone equipment.
  • Ability to chart in an electronic health system.

Required Education And Experience

  • Doctorate in Medicine from an accredited doctoral level training program
  • Completion of an accredited post-doctoral residency program in pediatrics
  • Active MD license in Tennessee
  • Certified by the American Academy of Pediatrics
  • Federal DEA Registration
