Reporting to the Manager of the Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) and in compliance with clinical trial regulations, the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba CRNM standards of nursing practice, and the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology (CANO) practice standards of care, the Research Nurse screens potential eligible CancerCare Manitoba (CCMB) patients/clients for clinical trial eligibility, ensures that the initial and ongoing consent/assent process is performed and documented, organizes study-specific treatment plans and monitors the ongoing progress of adult and/or pediatric patients enrolled in a clinical trial. The Research Nurse will also review potential/pending new studies for nursing feasibility.
In collaboration with the multidisciplinary care teams, the Research Nurse participates in patient/family education and counselling, making pertinent nursing assessments and appropriate interventions per the study-specific protocol. The research nurse participates in the recruitment of study patients and assists in coordinating and collecting specimens as required by the protocol. The research nurse promotes a culture of research within the organization. Nursing staff work with cytotoxic and hazardous medications on a regular basis. Personal protective equipment (PPE) and training are provided. The incumbent must be able to travel between sites and work a variable shift.
