What You’ll Do

  • Answer telephone, take and relay messages, calling/paging appropriate personnel to telephone for physician’s orders and patient diagnoses reports, and send/receive faxed information.
  • Enter patient information into Cerner system for discharge, transfer to other facilities and transfer between units.
  • Make arrangements for patients requiring procedures, such as laboratory tests, CT scans, ultrasounds by booking appointments, arranging ambulance, and informing care providers.
  • Transcribe physicians’ orders into appropriate forms (medication record, kardex, lab, medication, diagnostic tests, treatments) for RN approval. Notify primary RN of stat orders.
  • Check all charts for unprocessed physician’s orders at shift end, process them, and notify the charge nurse of any issues.
  • Prepare charts for new admissions, including labels, imprinting, and attaching orders.
  • Maintain patient records, file reports, retrieve charts, and dismantle charts at discharge or transfer.
  • Prepare charts for transfers, copying or sending information via fax or computer.
  • Complete demographic forms for Vital Statistics as per hospital policies.
  • Notify departments like Dietary and Housekeeping of patient requirements.
  • Perform clerical duties such as compiling statistics, preparing reports, maintaining supplies, and coordinating equipment repairs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12, medical terminology, graduation from an approved Nursing Unit Clerk program, plus one year recent related experience, or equivalent education, training, and experience.
