What does the Health Information Management team do?

Health Information Management (HIM) is a leader in the collection, storage, and distribution of patient information within British Columbia. Our dedicated team of professionals are some of the first points of contact at health organization sites. As a consolidated Lower Mainland department of Providence Health Care, HIM has staff at about 40 geographically dispersed locations across Fraser Health, Providence Health Care, Provincial Health Services Authority, and Vancouver Coastal Health. Approximately 1,450 staff work in areas such as Registration, Records Management, Transcription Services, Health Information Exchange, and Coding. Additional Corporate Services include Strategic Planning, Projects & Business Optimization, Culture & Communications. What you'll do:

Patient Registration Clerks are responsible for:

  • Greeting patients as they enter facilities
  • Processing patient registration (including inpatients, outpatients, ambulatory care, and emergency patients)
  • Handling preadmissions, admissions, and discharges; printing, reviewing, and maintaining bed lists
  • Coordinating with nursing and physician staff regarding bed assignments

Education:
  • Grade 12 and two years' recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Your Day-to-Day:
  • Interview patients and families to gather registration info and process preadmissions.
  • Complete and forward registration forms, obtain signatures, and prepare patient identity bands.
  • Use HealthNet or PharmNet to assign patient healthcare numbers (PHN) and print medication profiles.
  • Handle payments, issue receipts, and explain hospital policies.
  • Maintain bed lists, coordinate bed assignments, and update booking rosters.
  • Manage patient transfer requests and direct callers appropriately.
  • Respond to patient and visitor inquiries.
