The Department of Oncology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Patient Education Content Designer. This Full-time Fixed Short-Term position is for approximately 3 months (based on grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Glans-Look Lung Cancer Research (GLR) Program seeks a creative, detail-oriented Patient Education Content Designer to join the PROPEL ALK initiative, a patient-facing educational project for individuals receiving ALK-inhibitor (ALKi) treatment for non-small cell lung cancer.

Reporting to the GLR Program Manager.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Translate product monographs, clinical data, and research findings into educational patient-facing resources.
  • Develop content that fits a structured framework for proactive prevention, active management, and emergent care guidance.
  • Tailor materials for various literacy levels and incorporate user feedback to optimize clarity and usefulness.
  • Design visual elements or guide designers to ensure content accessibility (e.g., infographics, icons).
  • Review available research to understand audience needs and segments, and use these insights to create targeted, user-focused content.
  • Collaborate with patients, caregivers, and clinicians to co-design and validate resource materials.
  • Ensure content meets digital standards for readability, engagement, and accessibility.
  • Update and refine materials based on clinical input and usage analytics.
  • Promote consistency in tone, messaging, and evidence-based recommendations across all content.
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Health Sciences, Education, Communications, or related field; Master's degree an asset.
  • 3 - 5+ years of experience in medical writing, health communication, or digital content development.
  • Background in English, Journalism, or Creative Writing an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex medical content into plain-language materials for public or patient audiences.
  • Familiarity with health literacy standards and patient-centered design principles.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Canva, Adobe Suite, or similar tools for content layout / design.
  • Experience developing content for digital platforms (e.g., websites, PDFs, mobile).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Experience in oncology or rare disease content is an asset.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively across teams.
