Job summary

Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) seeks a Pathologists’ Assistant in the Surgical Pathology Department. This permanent part-time role involves examining surgical specimens, performing dissections, and dictating gross descriptions under supervision.

The PA will collaborate with pathologists and technologists, maintain accuracy to turnaround times, and use systems like EPIC and Microsoft Office. Ontario licensure and CAP-ACP membership are required or pending.

Qualifications

• Pathologists’ Assistant Membership with CAP-ACP.
• If CAP-ERC through CSMLS training, must hold MLT registration with CMLTO.

Responsibilities

• Examine and dissect surgical pathology specimens under supervision.
• Submit samples for histologic and other examinations and dictate gross descriptions.
• Report findings to Charge Technologists and Laboratory Managers.

Hours of Work

The stated hours of work are approximate as schedules are subject to change with the operational needs of the Health Centre. Changes made to hours of work will follow the terms of the applicable collective agreement, company policy and/or legislation.

What You’ll Do

Under the direction and supervision of the Medical Director and pathologists, Laboratory Medicine, the Pathologist Assistant (PA) examines and dissects surgical pathology specimens, submits samples for histologic and other examinations, and dictates related gross descriptions. In addition, the PA performs other related duties, as required. The PA is responsible to the Charge Technologist(s) in the area in which they are working and to the Laboratory Manager(s).

What You’ll Bring

• Pathologists’ Assistant Membership with Canadian Association of Pathologists (CAP-ACP)
• If Pathologist Assistant membership with CAP received through General Medical Laboratory Technologist training certification by Canadian Society of Laboratory Medical Science (CSMLS) and subsequent training, then must hold current Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO)
• Experience with Front End Voice Recognition systems (Dragon Medical preferred)
• Previous extensive experience in pathology including surgical pathology procedures preferred
• Recent Hospital experience preferred

• Demonstrated ability to performs tasks to meet the turnaround time and accuracy requirements of the department
• Demonstrates ability to organize and plan effectively; is meticulous in performing tasks
• Has thorough knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and general knowledge of medical disease processes
• Demonstrated dexterity, e.g. dissection complex specimens while maintaining personal safety and safety of others
• Computer skills are essential - knowledge of EPIC and Microsoft programs such as Outlook, Word and Excel
• Demonstrated ability to deal effectively and co-operatively with all levels of staff, patients, physicians, external regulatory bodies and the public
• Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills are important for interaction with patients and staff
• Demonstrated organizational and time management skills are required to multi-task and prioritize workload
• Demonstrated ability to maintain a professional manner under stressful conditions
• Demonstrated ability to adapt to a constantly changing environment and hours of work to meet patient needs
• Demonstrated ability to make decisions and use good judgement
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member
• Demonstrated good ability to maintain attendance
• Possess good concentration skills
• Demonstrated ability with additional skills such as general abilities to use a camera
• This position involves sitting or standing for extended periods of times
• Must have good team-work skills and promote a positive attitude within the team
• Demonstrated ability to keep up to date technically and apply that knowledge to the position
