Job description

Role Title: Pastor, Newcomer Ministries

Status: Full-Time (Sundays required) Department: Congregational Life Reports To: Congregational Life Pastor

Position Overview
As a member of The Peoples Church Ministry Team, the Pastor of Newcomer Ministries (PNM) will encourage our congregation to engage in compassionately and practically welcoming newcomers. The Pastor will mobilize, equip and shepherd a group of volunteers to serve in Newcomers Ministry. The PNM will encourage newcomers to become integrated into the church community through our discipleship pathway. She/he will network with other churches and agencies to provide effective support to newcomers and to be a godly advocate on their behalf. The PNM will stay informed of migration trends and realities to inform and develop relevant congregational ministries to newcomers.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Ministry Planning and Evaluation
    • Develop and maintain an annual ministry work plan aligned within strategic church goals and newcomer needs.
    • Create clear ministry outcomes and regularly evaluate programs for effectiveness and impact.
    • Stay informed about migration trends, newcomer challenges, and best practices in newcomer ministry.
  2. Leadership Development and Volunteer Mobilization
    • Identify, train, and support volunteer leaders across various newcomer-related ministries.
    • Equip ministry teams with cultural awareness and practical tools to engage newcomers meaningfully.
    • Prepare and lead regular cultural sensitivity training.
  3. Ministry Implementation
    • Collaborate with ministry leaders to design and launch initiatives that engage the congregation in welcoming newcomers.
    • Oversee and implement programs that support the spiritual and practical needs of newcomers.
    • Facilitate newcomer integration into church life through pathways such as life groups and serving opportunities.
  4. Networking and Community Engagement
    • Build and maintain relationships with external partners including churches, settlement agencies, and service providers.
    • Foster holistic support networks that address spiritual, emotional, and physical needs of newcomers.
  5. Pastoral Care and Advocacy
    • Participate in the discipleship and pastoral care to the congregation under the leadership of the Congregational Life Pastor.
    • Provide pastoral care and guidance to individuals and families navigating settlement challenges.
    • Advocate for newcomers within the church and broader community, ensuring their voices are heard and needs addressed.
    • Provide pastoral care and spiritual formation for newcomers and refugees including baptism services, weddings and prayer.
    • Model Christ-like compassion, hospitality, and advocacy in every aspect of ministry.
  6. Other Duties
    • Preaching if within gifting.
    • Participate in staff meetings, and church-wide initiatives as required.
    • Carry out other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications
• A deep, growing personal relationship with Jesus Christ, along with full agreement with the Statement of Faith of The Peoples Church, and a clear sense of calling to serve both the church community and newcomers.
• Theological education and ministry training is required, preferably in an intercultural or multicultural context.
• Ordination is required to conduct marriages. Must be an ordained minister or open to ordination under The Peoples Church.
• Sensitive, compassionate, and positive towards newcomers and refugees.
• Possess the ability to mentor people in spiritual life and personal maturity.
• Be a team player but able to work with minimal supervision.
• Proven experience in volunteer development, program leadership, and community engagement.
• Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills.
• Familiarity with settlement services and newcomer issues in Canada.
• Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and external partners.
• Familiar with technology and experience with using social media for ministry.
• Significant experience leading and directing public services and events.

Working Conditions:
• Vulnerability Sector Screening must be completed.
• Full time – Sundays are mandatory.
• Interacts with others (newcomers, community partners, volunteers, staff) regularly.
• Management-level position may involve working extra hours as required.
• Occasional travel locally and globally.
• Attend The Peoples Church.
