Job summary

Durham College is seeking a Part-Time Professor to teach Communication Foundations in person at the North Oshawa or Whitby campuses. You will work with adult learners to develop core communication skills in a post-secondary setting. Academic wages are determined by qualifications and experience.

Part-time remuneration is on the wage grid currently ranging from 80.62 through 139.88 CAD per teaching contact hour. Availability is Mondays to Thursdays 8:00–21:00 and Fridays 8:00–18:00.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree required; PhD asset or higher considered.
• Minimum four years of relevant work experience.
• Minimum three years of post-secondary teaching experience.
• Experience with Universal Design for Learning and current assessment methodologies.
• TESOL certification and EAL experience asset.
• Experience with industry-led or community-based applied research asset.
• Commitment to student experience and use of current technologies to support learning.

Position Information:

Durham College is seeking an experienced and motivated professional who shares our commitment to quality and student success. The Faculty of Liberal Studies requires a part-time professor to teach Communication Foundations courses in-person at the North Oshawa or Whitby campuses. Communication Foundations courses help students develop and practice the fundamental skills and competencies necessary to communicate in a variety of contexts in their chosen field of study.

Academic starting wages are determined based on qualifications and years of related experience. Upon hire, the incumbent will receive a pay calculation to determine their?step' placement within the pay range. Part-time professors will be paid on the applicable wage grid, which currently ranges from $80.62 through $139.88 per teaching contact hour.

Please take special note: Part-time faculty teach up to 6 hours per week with varied schedules Monday through Thursday between 8:00 am and 9:00 pm and Fridays between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm. Part-time recruitment is ongoing and is dependent on when courses are being taught and the need for faculty to teach. Course assignments are based on scheduling and instructional needs.

The responsibilities of Durham College Part-Time Professors include, but are not limited to:

• Creating a positive learning environment that accommodates students' diverse cultural and educational backgrounds, experiences, and individual learning styles;

• Utilizing principles of adult education to actively engage students in the learning process;

• Effectively using educational technologies to support learning, manage and post grades, and deliver hybrid and online courses;

• Developing curriculum that uses appropriate strategies and tools to assess student learning;

• Ensuring that course and program curriculum is current and relevant;

• Working independently and demonstrating initiative; and

• Working effectively with students, the program team, and a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will meet or exceed the following qualifications:

• A relevant and completed Master's degree (relevant PhD is an asset). A professional designation is an asset.

• A minimum of four years of relevant work experience.

• A minimum of three years of recent teaching experience at the post-secondary level (either university or college). Teaching in and knowledge of Ontario's college system is a definite asset.

• Post-secondary teaching experience with a demonstrated understanding and application of Universal Design for Learning and current assessment methodologies is required. TESOL Certification and experience working with EAL learners is an asset.

• Experience participating in industry-led or community-based applied research is an asset.

• Demonstrated commitment to putting the student experience first.

• Demonstrated use of current technologies to support student learning and the management of grades.

• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders including students, faculty, support staff, administrators and community stakeholders.
