Qualifications

Job description

JOB SUMMARY:

To provide musical instruction to students fostering their appreciation and understanding of music. Responsible to plan and deliver lessons on music theory and practical skills like singing or playing instruments. Successful candidate will work with the classroom teacher to determine student progress.

POSITION DUTIES:

  • Teach music to students form Kindergarten to Grade 8 guided by the big ideas outlined in the Ontario Curriculum
  • Provide instruction in music theory, history and practical skills like singing, playing instruments and music reading
  • Prepare students for musical performances including school concerts and events
  • Collaborate with the classroom teacher in assessment and evaluation
  • Maintain a positive and engaging learning environment
  • Collaborate with other school staff and parents to support student learning and development
  • Collaborate with in school or community knowledge keepers to ensure traditional forms of music ie drumming is included into the music program
  • Stay current with teaching skills and knowledge
  • Engage in extra curricular activities such as leading a school band or choir or organizing an event

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Respect for, sensitivity towards as well as knowledge and understanding of Anishnawbek culture, traditions, and the Seven Grandfather Teachings.
  • Ability to work flexible hours.
  • Is subject to six months’ probation.
  • Clear Criminal Records Check (CPIC) that is valid within 6 months.
  • Valid driver’s license and vehicle for on-the-job use with appropriate liability insurance.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality in accordance with policies established by Sagamok Anishnawbek.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ontario Conservatory of Music Level 6 or higher
  • Ontario Conservatory of Music specialization in one or more instruments
  • At least college level 3 year music Diploma
  • Ability to teach a number of instruments including violin, piano, wind, brass and percussion
  • At least two years teaching music lessons experience
  • Excellent communication skills written and oral
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Appreciation and willingness to learn about Anishnaabe culture and language
