Job summary

The position involves assisting with routine supports, behavior planning, and data recording, while maintaining confidentiality and teamwork with staff and families.

Qualifications

  • Educational Assistant Certificate or related diploma required.
  • Training in preventative/de-escalating behaviour or willingness to become certified.
  • Minimum one year experience with students with challenging behavior is an asset.
  • CPR/First Aid certification is considered an asset.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students per individualized plans including those needing additional supports.
  • Implement strategies from teacher plans and PLPs to support diverse learners.
  • Record observations about behavior and contribute to data for positive behavior supports.
  • Participate in planning meetings for IPP/SSP as requested.
  • Prepare individualized program materials under guidance of classroom staff.
  • Promote student learning and independence in the classroom.
  • Support personal care activities as needed and maintain privacy.
  • Assist with adaptive physical education and motor skill development as directed.
  • Support medical needs and safety as directed in collaboration with staff.

The Opportunity

RVS invites applications for continuing part-time (15 hrs/wk) Learning Assistant position starting immediately at Banded Peak School.

The Learning Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the diverse needs of learners within the classroom,school, and community settings throughout Rocky View Schools (RVS). Reporting to the Principal, theLearning Assistant collaborates with teachers to adapt and implement programs for students withcomplex needs, with a focus on promoting their health, learning, and independence.

Banded PeakSchool, located in the hamlet of Bragg Creek serves students from grades K-8. Information regarding this school may be found at https://bpeak.rockyview.ab.ca/.

Responsibilities Include
  • Provides assistance to students as identified in their individualized plans including those studentswho require additional types of supports such as personal, medical care, and safety needs.
  • Implements and reinforces strategies as directed by the teacher(s) and identified in student Personalized Learning Plan (PLP), Individualized Program Plans (IPP), Behaviour Support Plans (BSP), safety plans, and medical plans, in programming for the diverse needs of students
  • Records observations and other data on behavioral challenges and creates records that can beused to support positive behavior strategies for students
  • Participates in collaborative planning meetings for IPP’s or SSP’s as requested
  • Provides assistance with preparation of individualized program materials under the direction ofthe classroom teacher/student support teacher
  • Actively promotes student learning and independence
  • Facilitates interaction among students with special needs and their peers
  • Respects confidentiality and maintains privacy of information related to students and personnel
  • Supports students with routine personal care activities such as toileting, movement, personalhygiene, eating, drinking, and feeding
  • Assists in exercising, adaptive physical education, range of motion programs and fine and grossmotor skills development as directed by a specialist and monitored by a teacher
  • Supports students’ medical needs as directed, including assisting the student with transfers, tubefeeding and managing tracheotomy needs, oxygen, catheterization, administration of prescriptionmedication, and other routine medical requirements
Education/Experience
  • Educational Assistant Certificate or a certificate/diploma in a related field
  • Training in preventative/de-escalating behaviour, or willingness to become certified
  • Minimum one (1) year experience working with students with challenging behavior and applyingpositive behavior supports is considered and asset
  • CPR/First Aid Certification or willingness to become certified is considered an asset
  • An equivalent combination of Education and Experience may be considered
Knowledge and Skills
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with a variety of complex and sensitive issues professionally and ina timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out the plans and directions of teaching staff to assist students
  • Ability to build and maintain rapport with students and staff
  • Ability to adapt to dynamic situations, while successfully managing a high level of stress
  • Ability to work effectively in collaborative team settings
  • Excellent multi-tasking, prioritization, and problem-solving skills
  • Working knowledge of child development
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and web-based applications
