Founded in 1919, the Beach Hebrew Institute is one of Toronto’s five oldest continuously operating synagogues. Nestled in the Beach community, our Hebrew School has evolved alongside the needs of our families—from a single class 15 years ago, to four thriving classes serving 33 students today, plus a newly re-established adult Alef-Bet. While our Hebrew School is an integral part of synagogue life, it operates with a high degree of autonomy, balancing tradition with innovation.

Position Overview:

We seek an energetic, organized, and creative educator to lead our Hebrew School on a part-time basis. In this dual role of teacher and administrator, you will design and deliver age-appropriate Judaic and Hebrew curricula, cultivate meaningful engagement among students and their families, and coordinate program-wide events that draw the broader community into synagogue life.

Key Responsibilities:

·Design and implement a year-round Jewish calendar curriculum, integrating Torah stories, holiday observances, Hebrew literacy and modern Jewish life.

·Teach up to four Sunday and weekday student classes (ages K–Bar/Bat Mitzvah) and an adult Alef-Bet class, subject to interest.

·Use diverse instructional strategies—such as arts & crafts, drama, kinesthetic learning, and PJ Library story-times—to engage students and foster retention.

Family & Community Engagement

·Lead five one-hour Family Services during the High Holidays serving 200+ participants in total.

·Plan and execute holiday programs—e.g., LatkeFest entertainment at Chanukah, Purim shpiel, Tot Shabbat, Sukkah build kickoff, and off-site field trips

·Coordinate visits with local TDSB classes and other community outreach initiatives.

·This is a part-time role running from September/October through May, with additional hours required around Jewish holidays.

·Competitive hourly rate, commensurate with experience.

·Potential to take on additional responsibilities in bar/bat mitzvah tutoring, adult education, or broader synagogue programming, based on interest and availability.

·Supportive, collegial environment with potential mentorship from existing staff.

·Author and maintain lesson plans and supply inventories.

·Procure educational and event materials within budget.

·Collaborate with the existing Teacher during a transition year.

·Report to the Synagogue Board and liaise with the Cantor on b’nei mitzvah tutoring opportunities (in-person and Zoom).

Qualifications & Attributes:

·Bachelor’s degree in Jewish Education, Religious Studies, Early Childhood Education, or related field

·Teaching certification an asset, but not required

·At least of three years of experience teaching Hebrew and Judaica in a synagogue or Jewish school setting.

·Proven ability to engage children, adults, and families with ruach and creativity.

·Solid grounding in Torah, Jewish holidays, lifecycle rituals, and Hebrew language pedagogy.

·Strong administrative skills: curriculum writing, event planning, resource management.

·Excellent organizational skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

·Flexibility to teach both in-person and via Zoom as required.

How to Apply:

Please submit a cover letter and résumé to info@beachhebrewinstitute.ca. Application deadline is 5:00pm, Friday July 18, 2025. We welcome educators who are passionate about Jewish learning, community engagement, and inspiring the next generation. We thank all applicants for their interest; only those selected for an interview will be contacted. If you require accommodation during the application process, please let us know.
