Job summary

The High Prairie School Division is inviting applications for a Part-Time Educational Assistant at Joussard School, working 3 days a week for 3 hours each day. The role may become full-time in the future.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, resume, three references, and an original criminal record check with a vulnerable sector check, as required. Preference given to candidates with Early Childhood Training and/or Teacher Assistant Certification and First Aid Training.

Responsibilities

  • Assist teachers in implementing educational and therapy programs.
  • Support with individuals and groups as directed.
  • Maintain classroom discipline following teacher methods.
  • Assist with field trips and travel as required.
  • Adapt activities to students' abilities and promote independence.
  • Document student progress and observe behaviours for review.
  • Prepare instructional materials and classroom supplies.
  • Assist in collecting data for student evaluation.
  • Attend to personal needs of students when required under supervision.

This position has the potential to become full-time.

Joussard School is located in the hamlet of Joussard in northern Alberta within Big Lakes County, located 2 kilometres north of Highway 2, approximately 338 kilometres north of Edmonton. The school, which is located in close proximity to the shoreline of picturesque Lesser Slave Lake, prides itself on being a close-knit elementary school serving students from ECS to Grade 6. In January, 2016 the old Joussard School was replaced by a new facility which offers an up-to-date learning centre in keeping with the school’s 1:1 technology program for the over 120 students. Joussard School has a strong emphasis on weaving Indigenous learning into our classes by involving local Elder and Knowledge Keepers, offering Land Based Learning opportunities for our students,in addition to offering a Cree Culture class.

Job Description:

Primary Function:Assist teachers in the implementation of educational and therapy programs that address physical, mental,behavioural, health and safety needs of students.

Performance Responsibilities:
  • Implement Individual Program Plans under the supervision and direction of the teacher;
  • Assist the teacher in providing data for student evaluation;
  • Alert teacher to any special circumstances regarding the student;
  • Assist with large, small groups or individual students;
  • Comply with and assist in teacher's methods of maintaining classroom discipline;
  • Assist with field trips;
  • Adapt classroom activities to the capabilities of the student. Encourage the student to function as a member of the group by involving other students in activities and encouraging independence and self-help skills;
  • Monitor the student in class and on the playground to prevent physical danger and reinforce social and learningbehaviours. Participate in travel, training and off-campus activities;
  • Accompany the student to and from the bus, taxi, etc. Escort student on bus, taxi, etc.;
  • Conduct prescribed therapeutic and exercise programs for physically exceptional students;
  • Attend to personal needs of handicapped students in the program, e.g. feeding, toileting, general physical care to maintain comfort. Secure students in walkers or other equipment, move or position students, etc.;
  • Participate in all facets of the program designed to develop the language, independence, mobility and self-help skills of severely handicapped students, under the direction of the teacher or multi-disciplinary teams;
  • Assist in maintaining individual student's progress records for review and program planning. Provide observations on progress,behavioursas required and work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team as required;
  • Prepare instructional material under the teacher's direction;
  • Prepare and set out lesson supplies and equipment;
  • Clean and store materials and equipment after use;
  • Display student's work and prepare bulletin board displays;
  • Mark objective lists and routine exercises;
  • Continues to improve expertise and job-related skills; and
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the teacher/Principal.
