Job summary

Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre in Halifax, NS seeks a part-time Community Support Worker for Mainline. The role supports clients with harm reduction services, supplies for safer drug use, safe syringe disposal, and referrals to housing, food, health care and income supports at the fixed site and during outreach across HRM and southwestern NS.

Responsibilities include peer support, education on safer drug use and infectious disease prevention, and advocacy to access community resources.

Qualifications

• Personal lived experience of drug use is required.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
• Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays as required.
• Basic computer literacy and ability to record data electronically.
• Able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
• Understanding and commitment to harm reduction.
• Experience in harm reduction programs is an asset.
• A valid driver’s license is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Provide peer support to a diverse client population facing barriers to services.
• Distribute supplies for safer injecting, safer smoking and safer sex; collect used needles for disposal.
• Educate and support safer drug use, infectious disease and overdose prevention.
• Provide referrals and advocacy for housing, health care, income supports, and more.
• Maintain professionalism, respect, confidentiality, and clear boundaries.
• Prepare supply orders and receive deliveries; maintain a clean office.
• Collaborate with health and social service organizations.
