Job summary

Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre in Halifax, NS seeks a part-time Community Support Worker for Mainline. The role supports clients with harm reduction services, supplies for safer drug use, safe syringe disposal, and referrals to housing, food, health care and income supports at the fixed site and during outreach across HRM and southwestern NS.

Responsibilities include peer support, education on safer drug use and infectious disease prevention, and advocacy to access community resources.

Qualifications

• Personal lived experience of drug use is required.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
• Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays as required.
• Basic computer literacy and ability to record data electronically.
• Able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
• Understanding and commitment to harm reduction.
• Experience in harm reduction programs is an asset.
• A valid driver’s license is an asset.

Employment Opportunity: Community Support Worker – Mainline

Location: Halifax, NS

Salary Range: $26.50/ per hour

Employment Term: Part time (12-24 hours/ week)

Reports To: Mainline Program Manager

General Description:

Mainline, a program of the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre, is a health promotion organization dedicated to supporting people who use drugs through harm reduction programs. We are seeking a part-time Community Support Worker to join our team at our fixed site in Halifax and on our outreach service around HRM and throughout southwestern NS.

The Community Support Worker is responsible for delivering services to meet clients’ self-identified needs including: supplies for safer drug use and safer sex; safe disposal of used needles; information to prevent and reduce risks of infectious disease and drug toxicity; referrals and advocacy to meet other needs including access to food, housing, health care, legal system navigation and income supports.

Key Accountabilities

The Community Support Worker will:

• Provide support to a diverse and marginalized client population who face many barriers to accessing services.
• Distribute supplies for safer injecting, safer smoking and safer sex; collect used needles for safe disposal.
• Provide education and support related to safer drug use, infectious disease and overdose prevention, proper disposal of used injection and smoking equipment.
• Provide peer support, advocacy, referrals and other information needed by clients related to e.g., housing, social, health and addiction services.
• Treat clients respectfully, with compassion, kindness, and patience.
• Prepare supply orders for pharmacies and community partners.
• Receive and put away large deliveries of supplies.
• Maintain a clean and tidy office environment.
• Collaborate with other health and social service organizations.
• Encourage and recognize the input and involvement of clients in the decisions affecting them.
• Maintain confidentiality, privacy and clear boundaries

Qualifications and Experience Required for the Position:

• An important part of this position is to provide peer support to clients. For this reason, personal lived experience of drug use is required.
• Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and professional boundaries.
• Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays as required.
• Basic computer literacy and ability to accurately record and enter data electronically.
• Able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
• Demonstrated understanding and commitment to the principles of harm reduction.
• Experience working in community-based programs that follow a harm reduction model is an asset.
• A valid drivers’ license is an asset.
