This permanent, full-time position within the City Operations Department, Parks and Roads Services Branch, specifically in Open Space Operations, is for a Team Lead/Crew Leader. The successful candidate will report to both the Supervisor, Clean City Crew (for 7 months as a Licensed Horticulture Team Lead) and the Supervisor, Snow and Ice Control (for 5 months as a Crew Leader). In the summer, you will be responsible for maintaining horticulture and turf inventory within the Center City Crew's boundaries, leading an integrated team. During winter, you will directly supervise, lead, and dispatch snow and ice staff to clear city inventory. This role demands strong leadership, decision-making skills, and the ability to adapt to changing conditions while ensuring adherence to safety and quality standards.
What will you do?
- Direct and supervise field staff daily, providing coaching, mentoring, and performance management
- Ensure the delivery of work plans for shrub bed and turf maintenance, including mechanical weed removal, chemical weed control, planting, and mowing
- Oversee the orientation, training, scheduling, and deployment of personnel in compliance with OH&S Alberta and City Standards
- Conduct field inspections for quality control and identify issues, providing professional advice to your direct supervisor
- Manage inventory and oversee preventive equipment maintenance and replacement programs
- Prepare various reports to support unit budget and workforce planning, and aid in maintaining expenditures
- Communicate effectively with City partners, stakeholders, and respond to public inquiries
- Ensure all City Occupational Health and Safety Standards and Enviso policies and procedures are followed, implemented, and enforced
- Provide information related to accident investigations and process safety documentation in a timely manner
- Review and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Hazard Assessments annually
- Other duties required
Qualifications- Completion of a degree in a related field, such as Turf Management, Horticulture, or a certified Journeyman Gardener, or other related degree
- Minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience
- Minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible experience in park maintenance, snow and ice control, construction, or operations
- Emergency First Aid Certificate
Assets:
- Experience and demonstrated expertise with Google Applications Suite, Microsoft Word, Excel, SDMS, LMS and SAP
- Knowledge of other Civic Departments and agencies
Skills required for success:
- Knowledge of snow and ice equipment operation, maintenance, and repair
- Knowledge of the different maintenance portfolios and how the work is executed
- Knowledge of the PARS Operating Procedures and SOPs
- Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions related to the maintenance operation
- Demonstrated supervisory skills and ability, with experience supervising field-based teams
- Demonstrated experience with implementing safety practices and procedures

- Knowledge of City policies, bylaws, legislation, and the collective agreement between the City of Edmonton and CUPE Local 30
- Experience in monitoring and coaching employees and resolving issues with employees
- Adaptable to changing priorities, whether because of managerial direction or weather dependency
- Ability to document work and accomplishments by completing a daily time card in a professional manner

Conditions of Employment:
- Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
- Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a requirement for this position

- This work may require shifts for 24/7 coverage, including evening, weekends and nights
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position

Work Environment:
- This position involves working in a dynamic outdoor environment with exposure to extreme temperatures (hot, cold), dry, humid, and dusty conditions, and precipitation (rain, snow). You may experience vibrations, and be exposed to chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards. Protective equipment, including safety footwear, head protection, skin protection, hand protection, body protection, hearing protection, and eye protection, will be required. The role demands moderate to light physical effort, including lifting up to 20 lbs, climbing ladders, balancing, pulling, pushing, and reaching.
