As a member of the interdisciplinary team, contributes professional knowledge and skills in the provision and management of care to patients and their families. Maintains a practice environment that reflects excellence in Paramedicine at UnityPoint Health within the structure of the Professional Nurse Practice Model, within the Scope of Practice for Iowa Paramedics, and in collaboration with other care givers.

Provides patient care defined by the Scope of Practice for Paramedics and/or Critical Care Paramedics in Iowa and as authorized by the LifeFlight Medical Director. Participates in patient and family teaching and provides leadership by working cooperatively with other health care team members. Collaborates with physicians and other health care workers to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care while maintaining standards for professionalism in the clinical setting. Duties may be performed in hospital, out-of-hospital settings, aircraft, and ground ambulance.

Responsibilities
  • Assess patient and family needs, provide teaching, and make referrals for continuity of care.
  • Develop individualized care plans collaboratively with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
  • Complete documentation promptly to ensure accurate legal records.
  • Deliver high-quality care using the nursing process, adhering to policies and standards.
  • Utilize a holistic approach considering diversity, biopsychosocial, spiritual, educational, and safety factors appropriate to patient age.
  • Delegate tasks and provide direction to healthcare team members within their scope of practice, holding them accountable.
  • Use critical thinking to develop interventions, maintaining responsibility for patient conditions.
Qualifications

Education:

  • Graduate of an accredited Paramedic Program
  • AAS/BA/BS degree preferred

Experience:

  • Minimum 3-5 years of full-time experience in high-volume ALS/911 service
  • BLS, ACLS certification required

Licensure/Certification:

  • Current licensure as a Paramedic in Iowa in good standing
  • Critical Care Paramedic (CCP) endorsement required
  • Maintain BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP certifications; obtain NRP within 3 months of hire
  • Trauma Course (required upon hire)
  • FP-C certification (required within 2 years of hire)
  • Valid driver’s license for work-related driving
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Fluent in English, with multicultural sensitivity
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office)
  • Patient-focused with critical thinking skills and independent judgment
Other Requirements
  • Use of standard equipment for position functions
  • Travel to other UPH facilities or bases may be required; may operate a UPH vehicle or personal vehicle
  • Ability to perform in various environmental conditions, including weather extremes, noise, vibration, and aviation-related factors
