Job description

Join to apply for the Package Handler (Warehouse-like) role at FedEx Canada.

The responsibilities include physical loading, unloading, and manual sorting of parcels, including lifting, pushing, pulling, transporting, and placing items safely and efficiently. Package handlers (PH) may be assigned or rotate through various zones and positions such as loader, unloader, palletizer, scanner, weighing, SWAK, quality assurance, facer, switcher, etc.

In addition to the general responsibilities above and other tasks assigned by management, the following PH missions require specialized training and/or responsibilities:

• Package Handler Trainer: trains other PHs in loading, unloading, palletizing, and scanning techniques to ensure efficient and safe parcel movement throughout operations.
• Air Package Handler: responsible for multi-step inspection processes to ensure 'Air Restricted' parcels are not loaded into air containers.

Essential functions

• Uses the 'hand-surface method' for all parcel handling.
• Loads and unloads parcels onto or from delivery vehicles, trailers, pallets, conveyor systems, and loading grids.
• Lifts, transports, pushes, and pulls parcels continuously for about 3 to 5 hours, with possible multiple shifts daily.
• Selects the appropriate conveyor system by scanning parcels, reading labels and tables, verifying numbers, and memorizing information for sorting.
• Performs other assigned tasks.

Additional essential functions for specific PH roles include:

• Package Handler Trainer: trains new PHs in efficient techniques, provides feedback, reinforces safety standards, demonstrates processes, informs managers, and assists in implementing new procedures.
• Air Package Handler: scans parcels in the air transportation consolidation zone, inspects hazardous materials, fills notifications for restricted parcels, and handles parcels regularly.

Minimum education: Not required.

Minimum experience: None required. However, specialized roles such as PH Trainer and Air PH prefer six months of experience with FedEx Express.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities

• Ability to understand and follow work instructions and safety methods.
• Ability to discern numbers and information for proper parcel sorting.
• Ability to operate basic tools and equipment like carts, scanners, chutes, and unloading devices.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work well in a fast-changing team environment.
• PHs using switching equipment must hold a valid driver’s license and a DOT record.
• Trainer PH: ability to train multiple peers simultaneously.
• Air PH: must complete and maintain FedEx Airlift Consolidation Gateway training and comply with government-mandated training, with annual recertification.

Working conditions

• Must work in hot and cold temperatures.
• Must work in a very noisy environment.
• Must be able to lift and carry between 5 and 50 pounds.
• No travel required.

Part-time shift from Monday to Friday, 11:30 PM - 4:00 AM.
