Job description

Responsible for the physical loading, unloading, and/or sorting of packages by hand, including lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, and placing, in a safe and efficient manner. Package Handlers (PHs) may be assigned to or rotate through various areas and positions such as Loader, Unloader, Palletizer, Scan Weigh and Key (SWAK), Quality Assurance (QA), Facer, Switcher, etc.

Responsibilities

In addition to the above general responsibilities and other duties as assigned by management, the following PH assignments require specialized training and/or responsibilities:

  • Package Handler Trainer: Trains other PHs on loading, unloading, palletizing, and scanning techniques to ensure efficient and safe movement of packages.
  • Package Handler – Air: Responsible for inspecting packages to ensure that "Air Restricted" packages are not loaded into air containers.

Essential Functions

  • Utilizes “hand-to-surface” methods for all package handling.
  • Loads and unloads packages onto or from delivery vehicles, trailers, pallets, conveyor system carts, and load gratings.
  • Lifts, carries, pushes, and pulls packages on a continuous basis for approximately 3-5 hours per shift, with potential for multiple shifts.
  • Determines the appropriate conveyor system by scanning packages, reading labels, verifying numbers, and sorting packages accordingly.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Additional Package Handler Trainer Functions

  • Trains new PHs in effective unloading, loading, palletizing, carrying, smalls handling, SWAK, and non-conveyable package handling techniques.
  • Provides feedback and reinforcement on package handling techniques and safety standards.
  • Updates managers on operational conditions and assists in implementing new procedures.

Additional Air Package Handler Functions

  • Scans each package in the airlift area, inspecting for Hazardous Materials or ORM-D designation.
  • Loads packages into unit load devices as appropriate and completes necessary notifications.

Minimum Education: None required

Minimum Experience: No experience required

Specialized assignments may require experience with Federal Express Corporation (FEC):

  • PH Trainer: 6 months of experience as a PH with FEC preferred.
  • PH - Air: 6 months of experience as a PH with FEC preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to follow instructions and safety procedures.
  • Ability to discern numbers and information for sorting.
  • Ability to operate basic tools and equipment.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and DOT file for those operating switching equipment.
  • Training and certification requirements as specified.

Job Conditions

  • Work in hot/cold temperatures and loud environments.
  • Lift and carry between 5 and 50 pounds.
  • Travel is not required.

Pay Range: $19.35 per hour for AM shift, Monday to Friday.
