ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE (Job Description)



The Outside Machinist is responsible for installing and repairing ship's propulsion and auxiliary systems; including, but not limited to, Stream, Turbine, Electrical, and Diesel propulsion systems, rudders and steering gear, elevators, and Navy UNREP systems.



POSITION DEMANDS (Education/Training)



High School education or equivalent is required. Minimum three years of experience in a related field, or graduate of a Diesel or Aircraft Mechanic training school, or three years in any of the following Navy ratings: MM (BT), AD, CM, EN, GS, HT, or MR.



POSITION DEMANDS (Required Experience)




  • Ability to identify parts, read tech manuals, spec items and blueprints

  • Furnish sizes and clearance and provide recommendations to supervision

  • Experienced in machinery overhaul, installation and testing of the following:



  1. Winches (Electric driven/Electro hydraulic)

  2. Anchor windless

  3. Steering gear

  4. Air compressors

  5. Pump and motor alignments

  6. Valve and diesel engine repairs

  7. Hydraulic trouble shooting repairs

  8. Reduction gear, generator, gas turbine and boat davit repairs

  9. Bearing fit-up & installation



  • Propulsion experience on the following:



  1. Shafting repairs and alignment, fixed and controllable pitch

  2. Propellers removed and installed and rudders repair installed



  • Tool operations required:



  1. Operate grinder fixed and portable

  2. Operate drill presses, fixed and portable

  3. Porta powers

  4. Hydraulic jacks

  5. Torches and torque wrenches

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES




  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, written instructions/technical manuals

  • Install, repair and maintain ship's fluid systems which include pumps, compressors, purifiers, heat exchangers, actuators and valves

  • Tests equipment to ensure systems meet specifications

  • Installs and tests various shop equipment

  • Must have the ability to read and comprehend hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams

  • Capable of assembling/installing complex mechanical systems, while meeting alignment criteria of systems and equipment

  • Proficient in use of precision measurement tools

  • Understanding of both Imperial and Metric measuring systems

  • Must have shop mathematical skills, with understanding of geometry, trigonometry, and work with decimals and fractions

  • Constant safety awareness

  • Safely use hand power tools and portable machining tools

  • Must comprehend written and verbal instructions (in English).

  • Be able to hear warning signals, read and comprehend safety instructions

  • Other relevant tasks may be assigned



UNIQUE/ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS



Must be a U.S. citizen and qualify for a Common Access Card (CAC) and/or DBIDS badge. Must have reliable attendance and punctuality. Frequent to continuous lifting of machining tools and equipment, up to 50 lbs., climbing ladders or equipment, balancing, reaching above shoulder or out in front, manual dexterity, pushing, bending, occasionally lowering self into confined spaces, working in reclined positions, as needed. Must have good eye and foot coordination. Works in all areas of the shipyard and onboard ships. Must be able to maintain general safety awareness and avoid hazards in the work area. Exposure to fumes, odors, dust, gases, various climates and temperatures and low ventilation conditions. Exposure to constantly moving machines and mechanical parts and high levels of constant noise.



Pay Range: $28.70 - $37.67 Hourly



The pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity. At NASSCO Bremerton we anticipate making salary offers between the minimum and midpoint of salary range. Offers will be based on experience, abilities, and knowledge similar to the NASSCO Job being applied for NASSCO employees performing similar work.
