Job summary

Boyle Street Community Services is seeking a Van Driver in Edmonton to deliver harm reduction supplies and engage with community members facing poverty and homelessness. The role focuses on building connections with health services, de-escalation during crises, and promoting safer lifestyles.

Responsibilities include patrolling high-need areas, responsive outreach, data collection, and participation in occasional emergency response efforts.

Qualifications

• Valid Class 5 Non GDL license with a clear 3 year drivers abstract.
• Police Check with the Vulnerable Sector and Child and Youth Intervention Check completed within the past six months.
• Valid First Aid certificate or enrolled in a future course.

• Deliver harm reduction supplies to community in the Edmonton area that call the outreach phone.
• Survey areas with a high concentration of poverty and homelessness in Edmonton (Downtown Core, River Valley, Parkland).
• Engage in de-escalation of conflicts and respond to crisis (including overdose response).
• Help individuals experiencing homelessness along the health and integration scale, based on life situations and opportunities.
• Engage in discussions regarding lifestyle and health-related issues.
• Educate community members on harm reduction and safe-sex practices.
• Engage in de-escalation processes when necessary.
• Communicate with clients empathetically and non-judgementally.
• Collect data, statistics, reporting and other information on community members.

Education

REPORTS TO: Program Manager

LENGTH OF CONTRACT: 12 months

Reports to the Program Manager and Director. The Van Driver meets with community members facing poverty, establish and maintain links with necessary services including health care, addiction treatment, mental health care, and life enrichment. Van Drivers engage in continuous discussion with community member in a human-centered manner to promote harm reduction practices that give way to safer lifestyles. The Van Driver plays a key role in advocating for individuals facing poverty and homelessness.

Position Responsibilities

• Deliver harm reduction supplies to community in the Edmonton area that call the outreach phone.
• Survey areas with a high concentration of poverty and homelessness which includes the Edmonton Downton Core, River Valley, and Parkland
• Engage in the de-escalation of conflicts and respond appropriately to crisis which includes but is not limited to; emergency and/or overdose response.
• Appropriately help each person experiencing homelessness along the scale of health and integration, based on life situations, desire and opportunities
• Engage in discussions with community members regarding their lifestyle and address health related issues
• Educate community members on harm reduction and safe-sex practices
• Properly engage in de-escalation processes when necessary
• Communicate with clients and community members in an empathetic, non-judgemental manner
• Collect accurate data, statistics, reporting, and other information on community members in an appropriate manner
• All other duties as outlined by program manager.
• All staff at BSCS are expected to participate in occasional outreach and emergency response efforts (e.g., winter response) to support and engage with clients.
• BSCS is more than a workplace. It is a community where everyone helps and contributes to the whole, and there is an expectation that all employees will take part in events (during the work week and occasionally during weekends and evenings). This includes fundraising campaigns, running community meals, medicine picking etc.
