The Outage Engineer is a critical member of the ENMAX generation team of engineers and will provide mechanical engineering support for the ENMAX’s power generation facilities. This includes maintenance and design engineering support focusing on mechanical systems and equipment such as gas and steam turbines, high energy piping systems, static and rotating equipment and other plant auxiliary systems.


Major Responsibilities:

  1. Provide mechanical engineering and operational support for emergent issues at ENMAX’s generation facilities, from troubleshooting through resolution. Respond to emergencies, equipment failure, unsatisfactory equipment performance, conduct field investigations and recommend actions.
  2. Leadership of assigned Management of Change (MOC) requests, sustaining and new development capital projects including initial scoping, alternative evaluation, engineering, construction, commissioning and project closeout phases.
  3. Provide mechanical engineering support to the Fleet Maintenance team for major maintenance outages and activities at ENMAX generation facilities. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to assist with planning and execution of critical assets outages and implementation of MOCs.
  4. Assist and provide technical engineering support during unplanned outages to restore generation facility to normal operation in a timely manner.
  5. Engaging in activities for vendor pre-qualification, project quality assurance, safety audits, field verifications/inspections and to witness project activities such as testing, commissioning and operations.
  6. Undertaking engineering studies including technical and economic analysis for various projects.
  7. Aiding with the development of tenders and contracts, including specifications.
  8. Reviewing mechanical safety policies and operating/maintenance procedures for new or existing facilities.
  9. Maintaining compliance with ENMAX’s Pressure Equipment Integrity Management Program (PEIMP).

Education Required:

B.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering or other equivalent.

P.Eng. status with The Association of Professionals in Engineering and Geoscience in Alberta (APEGA).


Qualifications & Experience:

  1. 5+ years of related experience with increasing level of responsibility.
  2. Knowledge and experience with ABSA requirements, CSA and ASME as it relates to pressure equipment and piping systems.
  3. Technical knowledge and/or experience conducting assessments, testing, studies, inspections, investigations, designing, evaluating, construction monitoring & maintenance of mechanical works associated with static and rotating equipment in industrial installations.
  4. Technical knowledge of all aspects of power generation or other industrial environment pertaining to piping layout and design, rotating and static equipment and heat transfer.
  5. Exposure to project management in a multidisciplinary environment as well as project budgeting and cost estimating methods.
  6. Hands-on experience with the development and updating of project schedules and budgets.
  7. Field project engineering construction experience working with construction contractors, commissioning coordinators and start-up teams would be considered an asset.
  8. Strong work ethic, motivated to succeed, takes ownership of issues.
  9. Proven leadership and motivational skills and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  10. High level of coordination and collaboration skills to foster relationship building interactions within the organization.
  11. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and adapt to complex and changing priorities.

Location: This role will be part of our hybrid (home and office) work force with office workspace located at ENMAX Place (141 - 50th Avenue SE, Calgary, AB). You will work from home on Mondays and Fridays and in the office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. This role will also include site visits and work from some of our plants in the Calgary area at times.
