Job summary

Collingwood General & Marine Hospital in Canada is seeking an Orthopaedic Technologist for the Emergency department on a casual, on-site basis. TheOpportunity:

The Orthopaedic Technologist role functions efficiently and in a professionalmanner in all aspects of patient care. As an Allied Health Professionals, theOrthopaedic Technologist(s) work independently and collaboratively to providecare and support to the patient. The Orthopaedic Technologist possessesknowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, orthopaedic conditions,wound healing, fracture healing and complications.

The OrthopaedicTechnologist is a paramedically trained individual who performs their duties under the direction of a Physician. The OrthopaedicTechnologist collaborates with other members of the health care team, primarilyin the orthopaedic department, and occasionally in other areas such as thePlastic Surgery and Emergency Departments. Casting services are provided toboth inpatients and outpatients, usually in the orthopaedic clinic, but also asneeded in the inpatient areas and operating rooms.

The OrthopaedicTechnologist organizes the workload and fulfills the responsibilities of theposition with a high degree of autonomy, within established guidelines andprocedures. Clinical direction and support are provided by the attendingphysicians or internal staff for unexpected or unusual clinical problem.

Qualifications:

  • Successfully completedthe written, oral and practical examinations of the CSOT, has currentmembership in the Society and maintains certification through thecontinuing educational programme.
  • Certified inthe Added Nursing Skills and Sanctioned Delegated Medical Acts defined forthe Orthopaedic Clinic Area.
  • Must strive tocontinuously provide a safe and supportive environment for patients,staff, physicians, and volunteers
  • Must adhere to theduties of workers, as stipulated in the Occupational Health and SafetyAct
  • Must have an abilityto effectively communicate (written and verbal) in the English language inorder to provide excellent communication with team members, patients andfamilies. Ability to communicate in additional language(s) is consideredan asset.
  • Must have basiccomputer skills
  • Must be dedicated toprofessional growth & development
  • Must be abletoperform all bona fide and essential duties of the position, which mayinclude physical demands such as moving/transferring patients, pushing,pulling, bending, etc.
  • Must have demonstratedexcellent attendance/performance record
  • Excellent organizationand prioritization skills
  • Ability to workindependently and effectively communicate with other members of the healthcare team

Duties andResponsibilities:

  • Understanding theprinciples of aseptic technique.
  • Patient assessment
  • Teach patient andfamily regarding wound care, cast care and skin care based on
    knowledge of potential problem and follow up assessment of thepatient/family learning needs.
  • Maintenance oforthopaedic equipment and supplies.
  • Fabrication,application, adjustment and removal of orthopaedic devices.
  • Assist in theapplication, maintenance and adjustment of skin, skeletal and manualtraction.
  • Record pertinentinformation and action taken on a patient’s chart in a clear, concise
    and legible manner.
  • Removal of sutures,staples, K-wires, pins and external fixators using appropriate technique.
  • Applies, bivalves,wedges, windows and removes casts.
  • Fabricate and apply avariety of splints and bandages using various materials.
    Example; finger splints, wrist splints, Velpeau bandages, humeral splints,ankle/foot splints,
    elbow and knee braces, as ordered by the physician
  • Measure and fitpatients for ambulatory aids. Instruct patients regarding their proper
    use and care.
  • Remove and apply wounddressings and assesses the condition of the wound prior to treatment.
  • Apply specialized casts such as Total Contact Cast, hinged casts, shoulder spica, hip spicaand body casts.
  • Assist physician withprocedures such as closed reduction of fractures and minor
    surgical procedures with or without anaesthetic, using sterile technique.
  • Reinforce the teachingor medical information conveyed by the physician
  • Respond to telephoneinquiries from patients by providing information or referring
    the problem to the appropriate member of the health care team.
  • Remain current inclinical practice, technological advances in the orthopaedic profession
    and participates in ongoing education and development.
  • Participate willinglyin the instruction and demonstration of casting techniques to students
    and other healthcare professionals such as medical students, interns andresidents.
  • Responsible forordering and controlling stock of soft goods and casting/splintingmaterial.
  • In the ER:
  • Assist ER Physician withclosed reductions (i.e. dislocation of Shoulders, hips, elbows, etc.).
  • Closed reductions offractures with or without sedation.
  • Lacerations.
  • Assess ortho injuriesat triage and EMS bay.
  • Apply skin tractionand Thomas splint (Femur fractures).
  • Enter orders forxrays.
  • Help with the flow ofpatients

Wage:$41.63 - $49.45 per hour plus applicable shift premiums for evenings, nights and weekends.
