Job Description

Under supervision of the BUMA, the Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the analysis and testing of environmental samples to detect and quantify organic contaminants in water, soil, and other environmental matrices. The Organics Supervisor will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the organics laboratory, ensuring quality control, compliance with regulatory standards, and providing leadership to a team of scientists and technicians.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

Team Leadership & Supervision:

  • Manage and supervise a team of chemists, lab technicians, and other staff within the organics testing division;
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members, ensuring ongoing professional development;
  • Coordinate workloads and ensure timely completion of projects;
  • Ensures rush or priority samples are processed in a timely manner so that client commitments are met;
  • Conducts annual performance evaluations of all staff in their department;
  • Performs other duties as directed by the BUMA.

Environmental Testing & Analysis:

  • Oversee the testing of environmental samples for organic contaminants including, but not limited to, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), pesticides, PCBs, PAHs, and other hazardous organic substances;
  • Ensure accurate and reliable analysis of organic compounds using advanced testing techniques (e.g., GC-MS, HPLC, FTIR);
  • Develop and refine testing protocols to maintain high-quality standards and operational efficiency;
  • Performs sample analysis, integration, and data entry into the LIMS System, as required;
  • Assists technicians in resolving complications related to instrumentation, protocol, or workload

Quality Control & Assurance:

  • Implement and maintain stringent quality control processes to ensure all testing meets industry and regulatory standards;
  • Ensure compliance with ISO/IEC 17025, EPA methods, and other applicable regulations;
  • Perform regular audits, proficiency testing, and reviews to maintain laboratory certifications;
  • Performs method validation procedures for applicable test methods;
  • Training of new staff in applicable test methods;

Regulatory Compliance & Reporting:

  • Ensure compliance with local, provincial, and federal environmental regulations;
  • Prepare and review technical reports, ensuring results are clearly documented and presented to clients or stakeholders;
  • Interface with regulatory bodies during inspections and audits, ensuring all necessary documentation is in place;

Project Management:

  • Oversee the management of environmental testing projects from initiation to completion, including the creation of project timelines, resource allocation, and cost management;
  • Coordinate with clients to understand their testing needs, deliverables, and timelines;
  • Monitor and report on project progress, adjusting plans as necessary to meet deadlines;

Research & Development:

  • Stay current with developments in environmental testing technologies, industry trends, and new organic contaminants;
  • Lead initiatives for the development and validation of new testing methods, ensuring the lab remains at the forefront of industry standards;
  • Continually look for ways to optimize processes and refine methods
  • Focus on Automation.
Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field (Master’s or Ph.D. preferred);
  • 10+ years of experience in environmental testing, with a strong focus on organic compound analysis;
  • 7+ years of managerial or supervisory experience in a laboratory setting;
  • Experience with environmental regulations and laboratory accreditation standards (e.g., ISO/IEC 17025);

Technical Skills:

  • Proficient in the use of laboratory instruments such as Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), and other analytical techniques for organic compound analysis;
  • Strong knowledge of environmental testing methods for organic contaminants (e.g., EPA Methods, SW-846, etc.);
  • Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and data analysis software;

Soft Skills:

  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills;
  • Strong leadership and team-building capabilities;
  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal;
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail;
