Job description

Opportunities for Graduate Students (MSc, PhD) and Postdoctoral
Researchers
Integrated Modelling of Human–Water Systems
We are seeking highly motivated Master's, PhD, and Postdoctoral candidates to
join an exciting interdisciplinary project focused on integrated modelling of
hydrologic (catchments), hydrodynamic (rivers, lakes, floodplains), and water
management systems (reservoir operations, irrigation, and water apportionment
agreements).
This research project combines physically based modelling of human–water
systems with artificial intelligence and surrogate and variable-fidelity modelling
approaches, offering a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of
environmental modelling innovation.
The project has two primary objectives:
1. Develop computationally efficient tools that support real-time flood
forecasting, risk management, and optimization of water infrastructure
operations in decision-making for risk management.
2. Enhance modelling tools at large scales to improve model realism, ensure
consistency in the decision chain of modelling choices, capture feedback
mechanisms between systems, and enable learning about the future of
these systems through diagnostics and scenario analysis.
Required qualifications: Demonstrated competency in computer programming (e.g., Python, R, C++) Strong interest or knowledge in catchment hydrology, river and floodplain
hydrodynamics/hydraulics, and/or water resources management Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work both independently
and collaboratively

Additional assets: Experience with AI/ML methods applied to environmental systems Familiarity with industry-standard models in hydrology (e.g., Raven),
hydraulics (e.g., HEC-RAS), and water management (e.g., WEAP)
Successful candidates will be part of a dynamic team of researchers from
academia and federal/provincial government agencies. Final appointments will
be subject to budgetary approval.
While the positions are open to all qualified individuals, priority will be given to
domestic applicants. Remote work may be possible, and permanent relocation to
Saskatoon is not necessarily required — this will be discussed on a case-by-case
basis.
How to apply:
Please send a cover letter, CV, and the contact information for two references to
andrea.knibbs@usask.ca and saman.razavi@usask.ca with the subject line
“Integrated Modelling Positions” by June 15, 2025 . In your cover letter, include:
1. The level you are applying for (MSc, PhD, Postdoc)
2. Your research interest or knowledge in catchment hydrology, river and
floodplain hydrodynamics/hydraulics, and/or water resources management
3. A description of your computer programming skills
Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for further steps in the recruitment
process.
The Razavi Lab is committed to the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion, and
fosters a welcoming community for all.
