Job description

Location: Thunder Bay

The Ontario First Nations Technical Services Corporation (OFNTSC) is a nonprofit organization that provides technical advisory services, training, and capacity development to First Nations communities in Ontario. By offering a wide range of specialized services and expertise, OFNTSC helps to enhance the quality of life, promote self-sufficiency, and foster economic growth within these communities.

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Operator in Training to join our team at OFNTSC. Under the guidance of the HUB Supervisor, the Operator in Training will assist the Water Treatment Plant Operator in operating, maintaining, and monitoring their community’s water and wastewater infrastructure. Responsibilities include general maintenance, checking, testing, and repairing water distribution systems.

These tasks must be executed in alignment with the culture and values of OFNTSC while maintaining strict confidentiality.

Responsibilities
  1. Support the operation of water treatment and distribution systems.
  2. Check, clean, and lubricate waterworks equipment.
  3. Adjust and repair waterworks equipment under the direction of a qualified WTP Operator.
  4. Conduct testing and monitoring using chemicals (such as chlorine).
  5. Perform general maintenance on waterworks equipment.
  6. Provide labor support for water & wastewater operations as needed.
  7. Assist the WTP Operator in maintaining, testing, and monitoring water mains, major sewers, and pumping stations.
  8. Work in unsanitary and odorous conditions.
  9. Respond to inquiries, complaints, and concerns promptly and professionally.
  10. Keep records of work performed and the condition of equipment.
  11. Locate and repair reported water distribution system leaks.
  12. Perform fire hydrant repairs and flow testing.
  13. Apply related Provincial legislation and acts effectively.
Qualifications

  3. Effective oral and written communication skills.
Conditions
  1. Some out-of-town travel within Ontario is required.
  2. Reliable, insured vehicle and valid Class G Ontario driver’s license.
  3. Must be a member of an Unaffiliated First Nation community and available for emergency work outside regular hours.
