Job description

Blasters fill blast holes with explosives and detonate explosives to dislodge ore and rock. They work for mining, quarrying, construction companies, and drilling and blasting contractors. Blasters mainly work outdoors, sometimes in remote locations, loading explosives into blast holes by hand. They handle, store, and transport explosives and accessories in accordance with regulations, ensuring safety procedures are followed. Responsibilities also include cleaning equipment and assisting in activities within a safe and friendly environment.

Key Role Objectives

  • Carry out rock removal work using explosives.
  • Follow safety rules and instructions rigorously.
  • Handle explosives and set off blasts to fragment rock.
  • Apply practices that comply with company policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
  • Connect charges with detonators, primers, wires, and other materials.
  • Handle and store explosives safely, observing all regulations.
  • Complete blasting reports, inventory records, and other documentation.
  • Work closely with technical and operational team members.
  • Perform other related tasks as required.

Qualifications

  • Professional training in drilling and blasting or equivalent related field.
  • Recognized Blaster certification.
  • 2 to 5 years of significant experience in the field.
  • Valid driver's license.

Skills

  • Ability to take initiative and work independently in a results-oriented environment.
  • Experience working with diverse cultures; knowledge of challenges in northern regions is an asset.

Physical Demands and Requirements

  • Work in outdoor open pit/waste dump environments approximately 80% of the time.
  • Lift up to 20 kg.
  • Operate a vehicle with a Class 5 license.
  • Work in locations over 30 minutes from a hospital.
  • Sit and stand for extended periods, with the ability to concentrate and stay alert.
  • Work in environmental extremes for over 60 minutes.
  • Perform physical exertion frequently.
  • Hear and perceive fine visual details and colors.

Rotation

The work rotation is 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off. PPE includes hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, coveralls, rain gear, winter clothing, steel-toed boots, and gloves.
