Main Purpose & Function

Engineering Services supports the City by providing essential services like water supply, sewerage, drainage, refuse removal, street access, lighting, and regulatory functions including traffic control, parking enforcement, transportation planning, and utility corridors preservation.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Street Cleaning Operations in the Sanitation Services Branch maintains city streets, laneways, and parks. The Operations Worker II drives City vehicles and performs manual labor to collect litter, debris, and waste.

Successful applicants must meet Branch expectations regarding availability; functional and physical assessments may be required.

This position is for Night Shift only. Night Shift involves four nights per week, including weekends, working a 10-hour shift from 8:30 pm to 7:00 am, scheduled over a 7-day week. Shift adjustments may be required based on operational needs and collective agreement.

Available shifts include:

  • Thursday through Sunday, 8:30 pm - 7:00 am
  • Friday through Monday, 8:30 pm - 7:00 am
  • Saturday through Tuesday, 8:30 pm - 7:00 am
Specific Duties
  • Manual cleaning using tools like rakes, shovels, and leaf blowers.
  • Emptying litter receptacles on streets and parks.
  • Clearing debris from lanes.
  • Preparing for and cleaning up after special events.
  • Dumping waste at designated zones or transfer stations.
  • Responding to weather-related events such as flooding, snow, or storms.
  • Documenting work including vehicle inspections.
  • Maintaining cleanliness of equipment and vehicles.
  • Proper use and storage of tools.
  • Qualified employees may operate trucks and sweepers at higher rates.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Up to high school completion.
  • Labouring and semi-skilled experience with small tools.
  • Driving experience and knowledge of Vancouver roads.
  • Experience operating small trucks, sweepers, flushers, garbage trucks, or Class 3 vehicles preferred.

Driver’s License and Record Checks:

  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License or higher with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Class 3 BC Driver’s License with Air Brakes or higher is an asset.
  • Applicants must attach recent driving records from ICBC (within 14 days).
