Job description

What will you be doing!

  • Assisting in the safe operation and maintenance of the Port Hope and Port Granby Waste Water Treatment Plants within the terms of the Waste Nuclear Substance Licences and applicable CNL operating practices.
  • Operating process equipment, including start-up, shutdown, valve manipulations, and chemical sampling, as well as operating pumps, fans, compressors, hoists, lift trucks, overhead cranes, rig slings, and lifting tackle when required.
  • Preparing chemical solutions and performing routine laboratory analysis.
  • Operating and maintaining chemical handling equipment safely.
  • Troubleshooting operating faults quickly and accurately, and implementing appropriate corrective action.
  • Assisting and collaborating with other technical staff in performing tests, investigations, and special studies.
  • Collecting water and solids samples from the processing equipment for laboratory analyses.
  • Recording readings accurately from a variety of instruments, SCADA systems, and other control panels, making necessary interpretations, performing calibrations, and keeping the supervisor informed.
  • Supporting the Operations Specialist in developing and maintaining procedures, maintenance schedules, equipment inventories, check sheets, and protocols to ensure work processes are defined and conducted within the approved operating envelope.
  • Inspecting and testing safety equipment and associated control systems.
  • Identifying technical or operational issues, including abnormal situations or incidents, and reporting recommendations or solutions to the Operations Specialist.
  • Assisting with collecting, assembling, and analyzing data from process monitoring, sampling, and associated environmental systems.
  • Interfacing with Design Consultants and Construction Contractors to ensure understanding of operating requirements and systematic implementation of commissioning and turnover requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
    • A diploma or certificate from a recognized institute of engineering technology or applied sciences.
  • Experience
    • 2-4 years of experience or equivalent in experience, additional education and/or recognized training.
    • Must have mechanical and hands-on operational experience.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Ability to read and interpret all types of technical drawings accurately.
    • Knowledge of Radiation Protection (RP) principles and their practical application.
    • Strong understanding of regulatory compliance in operations, maintenance, and reporting within highly regulated environments.
    • Proficient in process engineering systems, including mechanical and electrical equipment typical of water treatment facilities.
    • Skilled in troubleshooting operational issues and abnormal process scenarios in water treatment systems.
    • Effective organization and management of maintenance records, work permits, and documentation.
    • Adaptability to learn new operational processes and evolving facility requirements.
    • Strong initiative, sound judgment, and the ability to collaborate effectively within a team.
    • Knowledge and adherence to emergency procedures and safe work practices.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Project).
    • Understanding of project management principles and ability to apply them in facility operations.
    • Familiarity with CNL’s organizational practices and protocols.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required

    • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

Working Conditions:

  • Combination of office-based tasks using a personal computer and hands-on fieldwork.
  • Moderate to high physical effort at times and the ability to perform duties outdoors in all weather conditions. The use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and dosimetry is mandatory to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.
