Job description

Large Civil Contractor is seeking an experienced Operations Manager with 8+ years experience on a large infrastructure projects ($50m+) in Vancouver. Reporting to the General Manager, the Operations Manager provides overall leadership and responsibility for site operations and field personnel, typically involving project execution, production tracking, and resource optimization. The Operations Manager works closely with site supervisors and office staff (superintendents, project managers, estimators). Key Accountabilities of Operations Manager:

  • Develop improved processes
  • Promote safety culture and ensure that all safety related items are dealt with promptly
Duties & Responsibilities of Operations Manager:
  • Lead the business culture to operate with safety, respect, professionalism, and efficiency
  • Support and demonstrate companies shared purpose, mission and values
  • Understand and deliver on each project’s scope of work, ensuring that the project team mitigates risks and enhances opportunities
  • Confirm technical approach by consulting with the division’s superintendents and foremen
  • Participate in the tendering processes as needed, attend bid review meetings
  • Ensure schedule-driven, resource-loaded project execution plans are developed
  • Verify that the field operations have the facilities, materials, tools and resources to operate efficiently
  • Review project financial forecasting reports with the project managers and, when needed, make adjustments to resourcing and equipment plans to enhance productivity
  • Work with the project manager and the Health and Safety team through site safety inspections, incident and near-miss reporting, development of site-specific instructions and general safe operating procedures
  • Clearly communicate expectations to team members and stakeholders
  • Be accountable for project teams’ performance and results
  • Communicate regularly with clients, obtain feedback and focus on client satisfaction
  • Participate in the recruitment and onboarding of staff, in coordination with the General Manager, HR and
Qualifications:
  • Successful track record of operational leadership combined with management responsibilities in a company
    providing project management and technical services, preferably with experience in heavy civil contracting
  • Relevant degree or technical diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution, or equivalent experience
  • The Operations Manager will have strong project financial management acumen gained in a complex business environment
  • Able to develop strategies to support the achievement of operational and financial goals
  • Strong client orientation and confidence to establish immediate credibility
  • Leadership, team building and excellent communication skills
  • Ability to manage a broad and diverse set of relationships and networks at all levels of the organization
  • A high level of professionalism, sense of responsibility and organizational commitment
Work Conditions:
  • Office and field environment, with frequent travel to active project sites
  • Working to deadlines, continuous team interaction, troubleshooting and issue resolution
Operations Manager will oversee:
  • Site logistics
  • Construction plan and execution strategy, adjustments to the plan as required
  • Resource tracking and planning – crew and equipment
  • Subcontractor management
  • Self-perform management, ensure operations are on task and achieving objectives/project requirements
  • Adherence to design, specification, and municipal or other owner requirements (temp and )
  • Cost and schedule control, understanding when and what changes to operations to make to achieve or beat base bid/plan
  • Field level change management
  • Field level conflict/issue management

Physical Requirements
  • May be required to work outside of normal work hours on occasion to meet the needs of the business
  • Frequent travel (mainly Vancouver and Lower Mainland British Columbia)
  • On call for emergencies as needed

Salary & Package: $180,000+, discretionary bonus (up to 12% depending on unit performance), truck allowance or provided vehicle, gas card, 5% RRSP match, fully paid medical/dental etc program
