Job summary

Eurofins Ottawa is seeking a senior operations leader to plan and implement budgets for the business unit, ensuring profitability, sustainability and growth across staffing, sales, IT projects and equipment decisions.

The role requires at least 10 years in a lab, 5+ in supervision, a background in Chemistry/Life Sciences or Engineering, and strong leadership, quality, safety and costing knowledge; bilingual English/French is a plus. This is a permanent, full-time, on-site role at Eurofins.

Qualifications

  • At least 10 years in a laboratory environment.
  • At least 5 years in a supervisory role.
  • Experience with laboratory instruments (IC, ICP/MS, GC/MS, GC/ECD).
  • Experience developing a budget and understanding P&L/balance sheet.
  • Knowledge of ISO 17025 implementation in a lab.
  • Bilingual French/English would be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement a budget to ensure profitability, sustainability and growth for the BU.
  • Strategic staffing, sales and promotion, IT projects, equipment selection and purchasing.
  • Design, implement and enforce procedures to promote services and deliver quality analytical work.
  • Ensure safe operation of equipment and staff, and environmental protection measures.
  • Provide guidance to corporate management and monitor safety and quality programs.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and adhere to Quality System requirements.

Job Description

Plan and implement a budget that will ensure the profitability, sustainability and growth of the BU's including but not limited to:

  • Strategic staffing
  • Sales and promotion

  • Competitiveness
Design, Implement and Enforce Procedures
  • To promote the services of the Company
  • Provide accurate services according to the goals and criteria set by corporate management
  • Provide quality‑controlled analytical and professional services
  • Provide efficient and cost effective services without compromising the morale or safety of the company's staff
  • To optimise, improve and maintain facilities, equipment and processes
  • Ensure the safe operation of equipment, vehicles and tools as well as the use of chemicals and other dangerous goods
  • Environmental protection and due diligence including solid and liquid waste minimisation, waste handling, storage and disposal
Other Duties, Including
  • Responsible for Health & Safety, Quality Assurance for Core Services
  • Monitor the activities of internal committees especially the Joint Health & Safety Committee
  • Provide support, guidance and knowledge to the President and other corporate managers
  • Enforce the corporate policies and procedures set out by the Finance, HR, QA, IT, and Marketing departments
  • Participate in activities which will increase the viability of the company and assist in the marketing of the corporation's services
  • Conduct yearly performance evaluations for direct reports
  • Follow the Quality System as documented in the Quality Manual
  • Other related duties as assigned
Qualifications

At least 10 years of experience in a laboratory environment, with at least 5 years acting in a supervisory role.

Education

University Degree (Master degree or Ph.D considered an asset) or a college Diploma (preferably in Chemistry, Life Sciences, or Engineering).

Technical Knowledge
  • Knowledge of most (if not all) laboratory performed methods
  • Experience working with instruments used in the laboratory (eg. IC, ICP/MS, GC/MS, GC/ECD, etc.)
  • Experience developing a budget
  • Understanding of a profit/loss statement and balance sheet
  • Understanding of statistical analysis
  • Knowledge of corporate policies and services
  • Knowledge of ISO 17025 and its application within the laboratory
Training
  • Conflict resolution training is an asset
  • WHMIS and Safety training
  • Financial training
  • Internal auditor training is an asset
