Overview

As a member of a multi-disciplinary team, the experienced perioperative Operating Room Technician (ORT) has focused skills in a variety of services that include Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology. Both scheduled (elective) and unscheduled (emergency) surgeries are performed and the position requires the incumbent to do on-call shifts. The ORT is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care during the perioperative patient experience in accordance with hospital policies and standards.

The incumbent will work with patients during the perioperative phase of care and must demonstrate a professional, positive attitude, excellent communication, problem solving and interpersonal skills when performing scrubbing and circulating duties in a surgical environment. The individual is able to contribute to quality initiatives and promotes a professional work environment at all times. The Active Treatment Center (ATC) Operating Room is comprised of 10 theatres primarily focused on Ophthalmology & Otolaryngology. The ATCOR is a busy and fast paced environment and does over 15,000 cases a year.

Responsibilities

As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, demonstrated skill level and AHS policies and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications

Completion of an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications

MUST have completed the Peri-Operative course or have the equivalent of 3 years’ Operating Room experience. Minimum of 5 years current general operating room experience in a high acuity OR with 1 – 2 years specific experience in Ophthalmology & Otolaryngology. Ability to perform consistently in a highly organized and rapid moving environment. Ability to collaborate within the expectations of an integrated team. Demonstrates advanced problem-solving skills integrating critical thinking and good judgment. Ability to demonstrate communications skills that promote respect and a positive team environment. Ability to stand scrubbed for many hours and to meet the physical demands of the position. The incumbent should have effective interpersonal and written communication skills.
