As a member of the military, Operating Room Nursing Officers provide nursing care in the operating room domain to ill and injured Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members and supported populations. They work in tertiary care and in-patient care environments in Canada and during operations. They are employed in the Scrub and Circulating Nurse roles and have experience in the Medical Device Reprocessing Department.
Operating Room Nursing Officers collaborate within a practice model with other healthcare team members and lead nursing care delivery within their practice area. They have opportunities to work in different nursing domains, including:
They typically work in civilian hospitals, CAF Health Services Centres, operational units, training establishments, and headquarters. Work schedules may vary from shift work to a regular 40-hour week, depending on the environment. They may also be called upon for exercises and emergencies, both domestic and international.
During deployments, they live and work alongside CAF members in similar environments. If joining the Regular Force, after training, you will be assigned to your first base, with possible relocations. If joining the Primary Reserve, your part-time workplace will be your Reserve unit, with minimal obligations outside training.
In-Service Selection offers opportunities for advancement and specialization. Civilian-trained nurses with a license and operating room experience may be directly evaluated for placement, possibly requiring additional education or certification.

After Lieutenant training, selected Nursing Officers must complete a formal operating room nursing course and obtain certification through a Canadian civilian tertiary care facility, tailored to their experience level. Further specialization in management and policy is available through additional courses.
