On-Call Library Public Service Associate I

We are the third largest public library system in Canada, with more than 800 staff members offering services at 21 locations across the city. We lend over 5 million items per year to our community, including books, streaming content, musical instruments, and more.

Worksite: Various (on-call) – LPSAs work at all VPL branches

Job Summary: Library Public Service Assistants (“LPSAs”) work at all VPL locations across the city. They staff VPL’s service desks, checking in and out items and answering basic questions to help patrons in a friendly and welcoming way. Duties will involve sorting and shelving books and other resources which requires the ability to lift and handle a high volume of physical items during a shift, and to stand, reach, bend, and move around the library comfortably for long periods of time. LPSAs also support our creative programs for adults, kids and teens.

Job Requirements:

Education/Qualifications:

  • Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by relevant courses and/or experience.

Experience:

  • Experience in a customer service environment is a great asset.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent customer service skills with patience, warmth, and curiosity for other people.
  • Physical movements such as bending, reaching, lifting, squatting, gripping, and pushing book trucks are involved throughout a shift.
  • Familiarity and comfort working with technology and handling multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to plan, be organized, and fulfill commitments.

Employment Type: Auxiliary / On-Call
Salary: $25.93 to $30.41 per hour

Work Schedule: Library work includes day, evening, and weekend shifts. Applicants must be prepared to work at any location in the VPL system.

Availability: We require our auxiliary staff to provide a minimum of 20 hours of availability across the week. Much of our work for auxiliary staff members is available on weekends or evenings. An availability grid is provided below; please ensure you include this grid in your cover letter and specify which timeslots you have availability for.
