The Okanagan Indian Band (OKIB) is hiring an On-Call Elementary Teacher to support daily lesson delivery, assessment, and culturally responsive education. You will help guide students to develop academically, emotionally, mentally, and socially in a culturally appropriate setting.

Reports to the Vice Principal and collaborates with school staff. This role requires flexibility, community-mindedness, and a commitment to OKIB values. Start ASAP; up to 37.5 hours per week.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Education or equivalent required.
  • BC teaching certificate issued by the Teacher Regulation Branch.
  • Current First Aid/CPR or willingness to obtain.

Responsibilities

  • Perform regular duties of the Elementary Classroom Teacher being filled in for.
  • Develop and deliver lessons aligned to BC Curricular Content and Competencies.
  • Follow established yearly overviews, unit plans, and day plans.
  • Support student-centered learning and inclusive practices.
  • Integrate students with disabilities and diverse needs positively.
  • Supervise classroom activities, field trips, and meals/recess as needed.
  • Participate in language and culture activities with students daily.
  • Assist with reports/cards for extended absences as required.
  • Perform other duties as required.

JOB SUMMARY

The On-Call Elementary Teacher will carry out the daily plans set by the regular Teacher. For an extended leave, this may include planning according to the yearly overview, and assessing students. The program will be culturally appropriate and will guide and encourage students to develop and program academically, emotionally, mentally, and socially.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Perform the regular duties of an Elementary Classroom Teacher who you are filling in for

  • Lesson and Curriculum development and delivery following BC Curricular Content and Competencies as set out by the Ministry of Education for BC for extended leave

  • Follow established yearly overviews, unit plans, and day plans

  • Support the student-centered learning program in place which enhances the explicit programs our school delivers

  • Integrate students with disabilities and challenges in a positive and respectful manner

  • Supervision duties to include; classroom supervision, field trips, after school, & recess/lunch supervision

  • Implement positive discipline when required in accordance with the School Handbook, which includes Conflict Resolution and Restorative Justice

  • Ensure children have a safe and secure learning environment

  • Attend Language and Culture classes daily with students to ensure classroom management and to learn language alongside with students. This includes local outings which may include hiking

  • In case of extended teacher absence, collaborate to complete student report cards and interim reports using school-wide format

  • Perform other duties as required


ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES


  • Monitor, record, and report on student learning and attendance

  • Writing reports including First Aid, accident, and behavioural incident reports

  • Become informed on IEP students needs

  • Keep informed of current trends in the treatment of children with learning or behaviour challenges

  • Follow all guidelines as outlined in the Cultural Immersion School Parent-Teacher Handbook

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the OKIB policies and procedures

  • All persons employed by the Okanagan Indian Band may be required to assist the Band in providing emergency services. Duties assigned during an emergency may differ from regular duties


WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR

You have education, experience, or an equivalent combination may be considered. You are community-minded, detail-oriented, have a willingness to contribute to a team and an excellent communicator.


Education


  • Bachelor of Education, or equivalent

  • Valid BC teaching certificate issued by the Teacher Regulation Branch

  • Current First Aid/CPR certificate or willing to obtain


Experience


  • Demonstrated ability to teach at an elementary level

  • Ability to teach multi-grade classes (grades K5-7)

  • Experience working with First Nations preferred

  • Possesses cultural appropriateness and sensitivity towards OKIB and Community

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the content being taught

  • Ability to collaborate as a part of the instructional team in a multi-grade classroom

  • Identify and use a variety of relevant learning resources

  • Create a classroom environment conducive to student learning, and understanding of learner differences

  • Ability to listen and demonstrate empathy

  • Demonstrates consistent and fair decision making

  • Knowledge and skill in computers, specifically MS Word and MS Excel

  • Demonstrate sound work ethic; punctual; respectful

  • Effective verbal and written communication

  • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy

  • An interest in the Okanagan Language and traditional practices, and willingness to speak the Okanagan language in the classroom


CLASSIFICATION/PAY SCALE

$38.09 per hour
