Job Description:

Job Responsibilities:

About BCFNJC: Empowered by the First Nations Leadership Council, in partnership with provincial and federal governments, the BC First Nations Justice Council (BCFNJC) serves 204 First Nations in BC. Our mandate is to reduce the overrepresentation of Indigenous peoples in the criminal justice and child protection systems, supporting Nations towards justice sovereignty. We are a growing team with 6 Council members and over 100 employees, operating multiple Indigenous Justice Centres (IJCs) across BC, including recent openings in several locations.

Indigenous Justice Centres: These centres provide legal support to Indigenous peoples facing involvement in colonial justice systems, addressing systemic and social barriers, especially for women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ peoples affected by gender-based violence and MMIWG2S+. The centres offer interdisciplinary, client-centered services, integrating staff wellness and cultural supports.

Position Summary:

The IJC Ambassador promotes a culturally safe and welcoming environment, manages client interactions, conducts intake, supports office operations, and assists with administrative tasks such as scheduling, mail, and office maintenance.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Manage client experience ensuring accessibility and cultural safety.
  2. Handle difficult interactions with empathy, ensuring safety for clients, community, and staff.
  3. Conduct initial client intake conversations.
  4. Collaborate with legal staff to ensure smooth operations.
  5. Support office functions including correspondence, filing, supplies, and equipment management.
  6. Assist with scheduling appointments, meetings, and events.
  7. Manage office infrastructure and maintenance.
  8. Maintain confidentiality of client information.
  9. Participate in staff wellness initiatives.
  10. Compile data for reports and maintain statistics.
  11. Support wrap-around services and team collaboration.
  12. Provide reception coverage and adhere to policies.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Work Experience:
  • 3-5 years’ experience as an office manager or similar role, or equivalent education/experience.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous cultures preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience with conflict de-escalation and empathetic engagement.
  • Proficiency in MS Office.
  • Knowledge of WorkSafeBC requirements.
  • Self-motivated, team-oriented, with strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and problem-solve.
  • Understanding of interdisciplinary approaches and respect for non-legal supports.
  • Commitment to a collaborative environment.
  • Clear criminal reference and Vulnerable Sector checks required.
Additional Details:

Reporting to the IJC Operations Supervisor, based in Nanaimo. Full-time, in-office position, Monday to Friday, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm. Salary range: $45,000 - $55,000, with benefits including health, dental, paid leave, and RRSP/TFSA plans.
