Occupational Therapist- Temporary Full-Time - Mental Health - Inpatient

Department: Mental Health - Inpatient Programs

Location: Kingston (Westbrook / Cataraqui Woods / Cedarwood)

Status: Temporary Full-Time (up to 12 months with possible extension)

Union Association: OPSEU

Position Summary:

Under the general direction of the Manager, the Occupational Therapist practices in accordance with the standards of professional practice and code of ethics as outlined by the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario (COTO) and within a patient and family-centered care model aligned with the mission and values of Brockville General Hospital (BGH). The role involves providing occupational therapy services to help patients achieve and maintain optimal health outcomes, working independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.

The Occupational Therapist participates in hospital-wide activities and programs that promote a safe, healthy, and patient-centered environment, contributing to quality improvement and risk management initiatives.

Education and Experience:

  • Masters and/or Baccalaureate degree in Occupational Therapy from a recognized university. Membership in good standing with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario (COTO).
  • Membership in the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT) and the Ontario Society of Occupational Therapists (OSOT) is encouraged.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience providing clinical services within inpatient and/or outpatient mental health settings.
  • Experience in assessment and treatment (individual and group) of disorders such as Schizophrenia Spectrum, Psychotic Disorders, Bipolar Disorder, Depressive Disorders, and Anxiety Disorders, including use of modalities like cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and dialectical behavior therapy.
  • Current BCLS certification.
  • Proof of malpractice insurance as required by COTO.
  • Valid Class G Driver’s License and a clean Ministry of Transportation Driver’s Abstract.
  • Current Assistive Devices Program (ADP) authorization is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of relevant legislation such as the Regulated Health Care Professions Act, Mental Health Act, Personal Health Information Protection Act, Health Care Consent Act, and Substitute Decisions Act.
  • Experience with Occupational Therapy assessment techniques and treatment modalities for the specified patient population.
  • Proficiency in non-violent crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques.
  • Strong understanding of the regional healthcare system, including mental health and addiction services, community resources, and referral processes.
  • Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Good attendance and availability are required.
