Job description

Summary:

The school-based Occupational Therapist provides services that help students to achieve their highest possible level of independent functioning within the school, home and community. These services include screening, assessment, consultation, program planning, treatment, administration, education and research. The therapist provides services that promote the fine motor, perceptual motor, sensory, adaptive, postural, and self-care skills of school-aged children/youth who live and/or go to school in Tri-Cities. The Therapist works with the school-based teams and participates in the referral process including using the Priority Intervention Criteria that used to determine the order of children being seen.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prioritize and screen referrals in collaboration with the School Based team.
  • Conduct assessments of students' physical abilities using standardized and non-standardized tools in various locations.
  • Assist in the development of IEP Plans and develop goals for occupational therapy services in consultation with the family and school-based team, based on the assessment results.
  • Provide goal-oriented treatment services to individuals or groups, monitoring progress and revising strategies as needed.
  • Provide instruction and guidance to school staff, families, and caregivers on specialized equipment and recommendations.
  • Recommend, prescribe, and modify specialized equipment and provide therapy services as needed.
  • Coordinate therapies and services with other community providers and participate in assessment, planning, and transition planning.
  • Maintain records and produce reports, ensuring that families and relevant individuals receive necessary information.
  • Provide training to school staff, families, caregivers, and other service providers.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy; registration with the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia.
  • A minimum of One (1) year pediatric clinical experience, including experience in a community based early intervention program or school aged therapy program.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • The school-based Occupational Therapist understands and can work effectively with children and their families to provide therapy and consultation services.
  • Will demonstrate strong leadership, instructional, written, and oral skills, and will be a committed team member.

Posting Closing Date: Open until filled

Start Date: Immediately

Location: Tri Cities and New Westminster

Hours of work: 35 hours per week (flexible to be scheduled with supervisor, some evenings and weekends may be required)
