NBRHC – NORTH BAY

Reporting to the Manager of Occupational Health, Safety & Wellness (OHS&W), the Occupational Health Nurse will work within the Standards of Nursing practice and the RN competencies of the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and the standards of nursing care of the NBRHC.

Primary responsibilities include ensuring NBRHC and the Occupational Health Service comply with evidence-based best practices and applicable legislation, including but not limited to the Occupational Health & Safety Act. The role encompasses clinician, specialist, coordinator, adviser, health educator, counselor, and researcher functions.

The ideal candidate will be energetic, organized, flexible, a team player capable of working with minimal supervision, and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, along with professionalism in handling confidential issues.

Areas of responsibility include but are not limited to:

  1. Prevention of injury/illness among hospital staff, including first aid, treatment, care plans, health advice, and assessments.
  2. Development and maintenance of clinical occupational health and safety policies and programs (e.g., Respiratory Protection Program, Communicable Disease Protocols).
  3. Development and annual review of Medical Directives for the Occupational Health Service.
  4. Occupational health surveillance, hazard identification, risk assessments, and control strategies.
  5. Coordinating staff scheduling within the health service to ensure coverage, including the annual influenza immunization program.
  6. Advising staff, managers, and employees on occupational health issues.
  7. Providing health education related to health promotion and protection.
  8. Counseling employees to clarify issues and facilitate positive interventions and referrals.
  9. Researching strategies and evidence-based practices to promote a healthy workforce.

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Completed a Nursing diploma/degree with current registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
  • Current BCLS certification.
  • Certification as an Occupational Health Nurse or working towards it is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health Nursing principles, demonstrated through education or experience.
  • Experience with scheduling and supervising registered staff is an asset.
  • Extensive knowledge of relevant legislation, such as Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, WSIB Regulations, Accessibility Act, Human Rights Code, etc.
  • Flexibility, organizational, and time-management skills in a high-pressure environment.
  • Working knowledge of the Parklane database system is an asset.
  • Ability to assess urgency and risk, and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Ability to build trust and influence others.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with attention to detail.
  • Commitment to safety for all staff, patients, volunteers, and visitors.
  • Support for a safety culture and prevention of adverse health events.
  • Good attendance and work record.
  • Bilingualism in English and French is an asset.
