Position: Occupational Safety Consultant

Program: Employee Health, Safety and Wellness

Hours of Work: Monday – Friday, 37.5 hours/week

Position Summary

The Safety Consultant is responsible for promoting safety awareness, identifying and mitigating potential risks, and providing input into the development and updating of Occupational Health and Safety policies and prevention programs.

Guided by the organization's health and safety management system, this position is responsible for planning, establishing, implementing, and maintaining a variety of safety programs to ensure that members of the organization have the knowledge, training, and tools necessary to complete their jobs safely and comply with relevant legislation.

The role of the Safety Consultant is to be the point of contact for employees regarding safety issues. The Safety Consultant provides guidance, advice, education, and training; develops and implements policies, procedures, and guidelines; and conducts hazard identification, inspections, and incident analysis.

This position plays a critical role in advocating for safety and demonstrating principles, practices, and processes that will foster a safe environment for all.

Position Responsibilities
  1. Ensure the organization's compliance with applicable Occupational Health and Safety regulations, legislation, and other legal requirements.
  2. Support effective investigation of accidents and injuries to identify causes and prevent future occurrences.
  3. Analyze injury and safety data, report on key OHS indicators, and make recommendations.
  4. Design and implement workplace processes and procedures to protect workers from hazards.
  5. Participate in long-term accommodation processes by creating and maintaining PDA's (Physical Demands Analyses) and completing job fit analyses against worker restrictions.
  6. Observe work practices to support process improvement and needs assessment.
  7. Update and conduct risk assessments, including violence prevention.
  8. Develop and update Occupational Health and Safety Policies.
  9. Develop and deliver training programs and advise clients on OHS issues.
  10. Serve as a resource on the Joint Health and Safety Committees and assist in fulfilling their legislated roles.
  11. Act as a liaison between the hospital and government agencies (e.g., Ministry of Labour).
  12. Monitor developments in Occupational Health and Safety within the healthcare sector; identify best practices, statutory changes, and analyze impacts, opportunities, and risks.
  13. Assist with the development of proposals, contracts, agreements, and RFPs as needed.
  14. Evaluate and monitor hazards and develop strategies to control risks.

This role requires managing multiple priorities, demonstrating conflict resolution skills, and meeting strict deadlines. Effective planning is essential for operational success and timely reporting. While largely independent, the individual will be supported by the wider Safety Team.

Position Requirements
  1. Completion of a university degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Ergonomics, Science, or related discipline from an accredited institution.
  2. 5-7 years of experience.
  3. Strong knowledge of provincial and federal regulations and legislation relevant to healthcare and occupational health and safety.
  4. CRSP, CRST, or CCPE certification is an asset.
  5. Expertise in safety and risk management practices within the healthcare sector.
  6. Experience in risk assessments, root cause analysis, education, and policy development to facilitate process improvements.
