Job summary

The Kamloops Aboriginal Friendship Society (KAFS) is seeking a compassionate Nutritionist to provide nutrition guidance, education, and resources to individuals and families across its programs in Kamloops, BC.

Reporting to the Family Service Manager, you will develop personalized plans, conduct one-on-one consultations, and lead group sessions that integrate traditional Indigenous foods and culturally respectful care.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in Nutrition or a closely related field from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Minimum two years of nutrition education, consultations, and practical support in community/health settings.
  • Experience with prenatal clients and Indigenous programming is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct one-on-one nutrition consultations to assess needs, goals, and lifestyle.
  • Provide nutrition education through individual, group, and community sessions.
  • Develop individualized nutrition plans reflecting client goals and preferences.
  • Support prenatal clients and early childhood development with guidance and resources.

Kamloops Aboriginal Friendship Society (KAFS)was established in 1972 and is a charitable organization with a status free open-door policy. KAFS is dedicated to empowering the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities of Kamloops and surrounding areas. KAFS provides culturally appropriate programs and inclusive services that meet the needs of urban Indigenous people to become healthier, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

THE OPPORTUNITY:

KAFS is seeking a compassionate and community-minded Nutritionist to join their growing team in Kamloops, BC. Reporting to the Family Service Manager, the Nutritionist provides nutrition guidance, education, and resources to individuals and families accessing KAFS programs and services. The ideal candidate is passionate about supporting the health and well-being of individuals and families through practical, evidence-informed nutrition support. They build meaningful relationships, foster trust through a respectful and non-judgmental approach, and are committed to strengthening community wellness.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Conduct one-on-one nutrition consultations with participants to assess their nutrition needs, health goals, dietary patterns, and lifestyle factors.
  • Provide nutrition education, guidance, and consultation to participants, families, caregivers, and staff through individual consultations, group sessions, and community education opportunities.
  • Develop individualized nutrition plans and recommendations that reflect each participant’s goals, preferences, and overall health and well-being.
  • Support healthy pregnancies and early childhood development by providing nutrition guidance and resources to expectant parents, families, and caregivers.
  • Participate in community meetings, workshops, and health promotion events to share nutrition knowledge, build relationships, and increase awareness of available supports and services.
  • Promote KAFS Nutrition services through community outreach, networking, relationship building, and the development of promotional materials.
  • Support participants in establishing realistic nutrition goals by providing practical guidance, ongoing encouragement, and follow-up as appropriate.
  • Maintain current knowledge of evidence-informed nutrition practices, emerging research, and professional standards to ensure services reflect current best practices.
  • Maintain accurate participant records and documentation in accordance with KAFS policies, professional standards, and applicable privacy legislation.
  • Contribute to the overall success of Family Services by collaborating across programs, supporting shared initiatives, and fostering positive working relationships throughout KAFS.
REQUIREMENTS – WHAT YOU BRING TO KAFS:
Education & Experience
  • Diploma or degree in Nutrition, Human Nutrition, or a closely related field from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience providing nutrition education, consultations, and practical support to individuals and families in a community, health, or social services setting, preferably within an Indigenous organization or community-based program.
  • Experience supporting prenatal clients, parents, caregivers, and children from birth to six years of age is considered an asset.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Strong knowledge of nutrition assessment, meal planning, dietary needs, and the development of practical nutrition recommendations for individuals and families.
  • Ability to incorporate traditional Indigenous foods into nutrition education, meal planning, and programming while recognizing their importance to health, culture, family, and community.
  • Skilled in conducting one-on-one consultations, identifying nutrition needs, and supporting participants in setting realistic and achievable goals.
  • Ability to deliver clear and engaging nutrition education through group sessions, workshops, community events, and outreach activities.
  • Strong menu planning and food preparation skills, including the ability to support nutritious and budget-conscious food choices.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to explain nutrition information clearly and adapt guidance for different ages, needs, and levels of understanding.
  • Strong organization, time management, documentation, and follow-up skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities independently.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development and the application of current nutrition research, dietary guidance, and best practices.
POSITION DETAILS & PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
  • Working schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:30am - 4:30pm
  • Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Clearance.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
TOTAL REWARDS:
  • Hourly wage: $28 to $30 per hour, based on skill set and experience
