The Clinical Nutrition Specialist is responsible for assisting UnityPoint Health-Des Moines clients in achieving their best possible nutritional status through the application of a broad base of dietetic knowledge and experience.The primary goal of UnityPoint Health - Des Moines is to improve the health of the community through healing, caring and teaching.Care given by the Clinical Nutrition Specialist contributes directly toward the achievement of positive patient outcomes.The Clinical Nutrition Specialist serves as an expert on clinical nutrition through education and marketing to physicians, patients, students, and other health professionals.Care given by clinical nutrition specialist contributes directly toward achieving this goal - Best Outcome for Every Patient Every Time.

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates initiative to improve quality and customer service by striving to exceed customer expectations.

  • Practice reflects knowledge of HIPAA, OSHA, and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
  • Demonstrates the ability to meet the department work schedule.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.
  • Oversees technical and support staff in the absence of administrative leadership personnel.
  • Plans and participates in interdisciplinary quality assurance and/or research studies relevant to nutrition services to enhance patient outcomes, contribute to cost savings, and to impact length of stay (i.e. formula room QI, nutrition support audits, diet order audits, ICU International Survey).
  • Maintains responsibility for evaluation and monitoring of nutrition related supplies, storage and utilization on assigned patient care areas.Also acts as a nutrition liaison to assigned area, providing nutrition information and solving patient care/nutrition problems unique to the assigned area &/or patient population(s).

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Requirements

Education:

* Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a major in foods, human nutrition, or dietetics; food service management; or Institution Management.

* Successful completion of a postgraduate or equivalent dietetic program that fulfills requirements for registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

* Master's degree in Nutrition or related field or advanced dietitian certification within 18-24 months of hire (preferred)

Experience:

* Advanced level; specific to clinical specialty required.

* A minimum of two years of progressively responsible inpatient clinical dietetic practice within the past five years (preferred)

License(s)/Certification(s):

* Must be and maintain licensure as a Licensed Dietitian in the State of Iowa.

* Must maintain registration status through the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

* Advanced certification within 18-24 months of hire

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

* Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.

* Multicultural sensitivity.

* Microsoft Office - basic computer skills.

* Customer/patient focused.

* Critical thinking skills using independent judgment in making decisions.

* Teamwork.

Other:

* Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.

* Work may occasionally require travel to other UPH facilities.
